I can find no ship Oscar arriving in Victoria.  I have searched both in online indexes at PROV and other resources of early shipping to Victoria.

There is no mention of a ship with a surviving passenger list into South Australia in that era
http://www.saghs.org.au/ships/shipsOPQ.htm
or
http://www.familyhistorysa.info/shipping/passengerlists.html

John was born well before civil registration commenced in Victoria.  Perhaps there may be a parish record for his baptism.  Not all churches were forthcoming in handing over their records to the Registrar of BDM's.

Your John has a 2nd given name on the index and perhaps his age is incorrect on the death cert as it would make his born c1849.

WILLIAMS John Henry
Father Unknown  Mother Unknown  UNKNOWN
At Port Fairy   80 years  1929  Reg#6810

I wonder if this Oscar was a coastal trader only.

Cheers

John Williams married  Sarah Jane Eccles (Ralph Eccles x Mary Anne Baulch ,We have generations of this side of the family)
married ; 1871 aged 24 in Hawkesdale Vic.
died ; 1929 Port Fairy
buried ; Hawkesdale
Daughter
Ellen Mary Williams
Born 1884 Hawkesdake
Married Thom Paton (we have generations of this side of the family also).

His age when he died could easily be wrong as his son supplied the details and didn't give  parents names only those of John's children. That was how my cousin found him.

I have no idea if John and Jane were married when the came out. It is assumed that they lived at least some time in Geelong.

I don't know if Jane Burns was a convict or not.

Where would I go to find a parish record ?

If the Oscar was a coastal Trader are there records for this sort of thing ?

I have had a look at some of the Tasmanian records on-line and was wondering if it is possible that they may have landed in W.A. what do you think ?

Can't thank you enough for all your help.

This link should help you.

My understanding that coastal traders carrying freight also carried a few passengers.  I am more familiar with the era from 1890 to 1910.

I have looked at my resource for Passenger Arrivals in WA and there is no ship Oscar or a passenger record that could be your John WILLIAMS....

Could they have both been convicts?  Today we boast about having a convict as an ancestor but years ago it was considered a tad shameful.

There were a number of schemes run by the pastoralists to bring ex-convicts to Geelong from Tasmania.  Perhaps this is how both arrived.

I didn't think there were any convicts in South Australia - wasn't it the state without convicts??    so if they went there, they were not convicts - I think that is correct.

Yes Jenn I have the marriage record for John Williams and  Sarah Eccles.

I have the death cert for John jnr.

Have a Jane Williams buried 12/5/1884 unmarked public  COE grave wife of Mr Williams stone mason.

I would have thought that being a stone mason one of them could have had a headstone  with a lot of info on it. ::)
There are a few John Williams in Geelong cemetery I have narrowed it to 4.
There is a JW on the list from jwillims (she Dosn't seem to be connected) so I'm on to that in the morning also the cemetery J.Williamsweb.

My Grandmother (dec) told Mum that they came from SA to Vic . She was pretty accurate with her info.
There are no hints that they were convicts but until proven otherwise I can't rule it out.

I will be back with some answers

Thanks
