Bleaching is what it means. From the OED Bleach in combination as bleach-croft, -field, -green, -grounds, -works, -yard.
Flax was bleached, it was not an area for drying wheat, which was dried in the field in sheaves which were placed upright, supporting each other, in order to permit the drying and ripening of the grain before carrying.
