1871 Birth certificate
« on: Thursday 16 July 09 11:14 BST (UK) »
Hi I'm looking for info on how to obtain a birth certificate for someone born in Newport in 1871,
the name is Mary Dance, daughter of James & Elizabeth, James would have been serving in the army at the time, his Regiment would be the 21st of foot.

Any help would be most appreciated, TIA   Nick

Thanks for that, I’ve tried the BMD site before for Mary with no luck, got the same response today,
The info I have comes from an Army, Births & Baptisms list.
Mary was my Grandmothers sister, and according to the list was born in Newport, I’m trying to find my great grandmothers maiden name, when I tried to get my Grandmothers birth certificate [Born in Barbados] it showed her parents has James and Elisabeth Dance no maiden name showing, so I was hoping that being born in Newport might have giving me a better result.
Thanks again         Nick

Hello Nick

It looks like Mary is also on the GRO Regimental Birth Index.

A choice of 2:

Mary E Dance born Newport 1871 21st Regiment Vol. 1658 Page 66
Mary E Dance born Newport  Mon(?) 1871 21st Regiment  Vol. 1872 Page 10

(both reference numbers are unclear)

So it seems that the information you will get might well be the same as you had for Sarah.

Do you have any other details for James and/or Elizabeth? Have you traced them in later Censuses?

Regards

Ivan

Hi Ivan, thanks, I do have James and  Elizabeth on the 1881 & 1891 census, Mary isn't on either of them.
Elizabeth's POB is given as Limerick, so I take it they must have married while James was serving in Ireland.
Thanks for your reply
Nick

I received the birth certificate today, Great result thanks to osprey's post, I emailed Newport office with the info you gave, and they traced it for me.
I'm really pleased because It taken me some time to find my G-grandmothers maiden name.
Can now start looking for their marriage certificate. ;D
