wedding banns forDavid and Isabella mckenzie
« on: Friday 17 July 09 13:39 BST (UK) »
hi, I am looking for help in tracing the father of David mckenzie and this being a completely new hobby to me any help or info would be greatly appreciated. The information that I have so far is that  David mckenzie residing in the parish of Alves and Isabella Dunbar residing in parish of Golspie had the reading of their wedding banns commence on the 7 of december 1851. There is no date given for the wedding service They had two children John born 1853 at alves and Alexander born 1855 also at Alves. The 1861 census shows David and family in Edinburgh he is shown as being aged 34 and a police constable isabella would now seem to be known as Sarah and John is shown as an 8 year old scholar.

My problem is that I cannot find either a batism record for David or a death certificate from which I could learn his parents names and any other info regarding the same I,ve tried to be as brief as possible with this post as well as posting as much info as I can any help or advice would be gratefully received

Alex.

Hi Alex

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Is the son John the line you are following? Possibility the marriage you have found in 1851 may be for another couple as I think there were two different Dunbar mothers, Isabella and Sarah. These are the children showing to a David and Isabella:

1. JAMES MACKENZIE Birth: 06 MAR 1855 Urquhart, Moray
2. ISABELLA MC KENZIE Birth: 29 DEC 1856 Urquhart, Moray
3. DAVID MC KENZIE  Birth: 16 SEP 1860 St. Andrews-Lhanbryd, Moray

There is a likely entry in 1861 for this family in St Andrews Lhanbryd with these children, father David is a ploughman b. in Petty Inverness-shire c. 1823.

Regarding the family of David and Sarah (Dunbar), there is one more child showing as born in 1856, also in Alves, CATHERINE MC KENZIE b. 07 OCT 1856. This certificate is available to view on line on Scotlands People. Can't see any more children born to them after this date.

I'm going to take some calculated guesses here Alex until you are able to verify  ;) This is the entry that you have for the family in 1861:

David McKenzie 34, police constable, b. Rossshire
Sarah McKenzie 33, b. Morayshire
John McKenzie 8, b. Aberdeenshire
John Ross 32, boarder
Donald Sutherland 21, boarder
Peter Ross 22, boarder

Address:James Court, Edinburgh Tolbooth

I wonder if this could be David and Sarah in 1851:

David MacKenzie 25, gen. lab., b. Creich, Sutherland
Sarah MacKenzie 26, b. Forres
Infant (female) MacKenzie 5 Months, b. Forres
Agnes Dunbar 15, visitor, a wright's daughter, b. Forres

Address: 3 Long Row, Forres

Jumping about a bit here on the censuses now! So we have the family in 1851 with more specific birth places than those showing in 1861. You had the family in Edinburgh for 1861. This looks to be them in 1871:

David McKenzie 46, police constable, b. Kincardine, Rossshire
Sarah McKenzie 46, b. Forres Morayshire
John McKenzie 18, Apprentice Crgenier (?spl), b. Alves
Alexander McKenzie 16, Apprentice Printer, b. Alves

Address: 6 Writers Court, Edinburgh St Giles

Can't easily see parents in 1881, but could this be Alexander:

Alexander McKenzie 26, Dispatch Clerk, b. Elgin Alves
Bridget McKenzie 25, b. Ireland
Catherine McKenzie 11 Months, b. Edinburgh

Address: 14 No Richmond St, Edinburgh St Cuthberts

A check on this Alexander's marriage cert on Scotlands People would let you confirm whether it is the correct Alexander and whether parents show as alive or deceased (and father's occupation).

And John in 1881 perhaps:

John McKenzie 27, engine fitter, b. Alves
Mary McKenzie 28
David McKenzie 6
Agnes McKenzie 5
Mary McKenzie 3
John McKenzie 1
John Craig 19, boarder

Address: 4 Milne Sqr, Edinburgh High Church

Son Alexander who doesn't show with the family in 1861 is with his maternal grandparents for that census  :). Everyone showing as born in Forres except for Agnes Snr.:

John Dunbar 59, carpenter
Agnes Dunbar 56, b. Alloboll, Rossshire
John Dunbar 27
Isabella Dunbar 17
William Ross 10, grandson
Alexander McKenzie 5, grandson
Agnes Dunbar 9 Months, granddaughter

Address: Pilmuir, Forres Morayshire

The Agnes Dunbar showing in 1851 with David and Sarah is likely to have been Sarah's sister. These look to be the children for John Dunbar and Agnes Fraser, including Sarah's details. Entries are a mixture of submitted and actual extract from the Old Parish Registers all in Forres:

1. SARAH DUNBAR Birth: 02 FEB 1824/ Christening: 13 FEB 1824
2. JANE DUNBAR Birth: 10 MAR 1826/ Christening: 08 APR 1826
3. ALEXANDER DUNBARBirth: 06 DEC 1828/ Christening: 21 DEC 1828
4. John DUNBAR  Birth: About 1831...submitted entry
5. David DUNBARBirth: About 1834 ...submitted entry
6. Agnes DUNBAR Birth: About 1836 ...submitted entry
7. Catherine DUNBAR  Birth: About 1839 ...submitted entry

I've been rubbish regarding finding you anything regarding David McK  :P He's given numerous birth places on the censuses so hard to get a handle on him at present. A lot more on line regarding Sarah's family including:

the family I am interested in are david and sarah(dunbar) catherine mckenzie had two brothers John brn 1853 at alves and Alexander brn 1855 also at Alves so it would seem that I was on the wrong track as regards David and Isabella the one I am researching is David who is a direct descendant of mine

thank you

Alex.

I have checked marriage cert for Alexander mckenzie and Briget mckerran whilst unable to read father,s occupation all other details fit so, yes this is the right family. David and sarah not recorded as deceased

thank you

yes the entry I have for the the 1861 census and the 1871 census tally John mckenzie,s occupation is given as an apprentice engineer. from your information I now know why Alexander did not appear in the 1861 census might be a stupid question, but would I be right in saying that sarah dunbar born 2-2- 1824 is the wife of David mckenzie?
