Driffield
« on: Friday 17 July 09 16:49 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am searching for Rachel Driffield. I believe she married James Warren in 1858, in Newport Mon.
1891 census shows her born in Pembrey, Carmarthenshire. about 1827 / 8
1881 census shows her born in Llendoth ?, Carmarthenshire.
I have failed to find anywhere that resembles Llendoth.
Please can someone help me find Llendoth? and hopefully details of Rachels birth and early life.

Many thanks,
hencarrai  :)

If you're looking at the James & Rachel Warren in Trevethin in 1881 RG11/5251 folio 58 pg 11, I think you may have the wrong marriage and this is the one you need

James Warren march qtr 1873 Pontypool vol 11a pg 148 with Rachel Evans on the same page

which accounts for the Daniel Evans stepson in the household. Rachel Evans is in Bedwelty in 1861 RG9/4006 folio 6 pg 10 & 1871 RG10/5330 folio 8 pg 10

There is another James & Rachel Warren couple in Newport to account for the 1858 marriage.

If you get the Pontypool cert, it should give Rachel's father's name

Thanks Osprey,
your option looks very good, I'll have another dig.
I have only just begun my Tree and the Warren side is very sketchy at the moment.
I have been down a few wrong paths already.

Thanks again for your guidance,

Hencarrai

Hello Osprey,
I now believe I am on the right track with James Warren etc, and have discounted Rachel driffield thanks to your help.

I think JW married Rhoda Plummer (Plumer) Dec 1862 Pontypool 11a 175.
Rhoda Warren died Dec 1871 Pontypool 11a 97 (aged 36)

JW remarried to Rachel Evans Mar 1873 Pontypool 11a 148

I now have copy of birth cert for Eliza Warren showing James as father and Rhoda Warren formerly Plummer as mother.
Eliza born 8th Jan 1863 in Llanhilleth Mon.

I believe this Eliza Warren was my grandmother for whom I have the original marriage cert.  Eliza Warren (aged 21, living at Blaensychan, father was James) to Lewis Jones (28) living at Cefn Coch.
Date 20 Oct 1884.

Assuming this is all correct, my next problem is how to go back further as James and Rhoda born about 1836. What's the best way forward please?
Thanks again,
Hencarrai

next step is the marriage certificate for James & Rhoda so that you have the names & occupations of their fathers. Have you found them in all the census years?

1871 census gives parishes of birth, but the places may differ in other census entries.
Blaensychan, Trevethin RG10/5333 folio 26 pg 8
James Warren head mar 36 coal miner b. Raglan
Rhoda wife 36 b. Aberbeeg
Eliza dau 8 b. Llanhilleth
Thomas son 6 b. Trevethin
William son 4 b. Trevethin
Emily Ann dau 1 b. Trevethin

1851 census has a possible for James in Trevithin with father Henry, a farmer - marriage cert would confirm this relationship. But he is 11, making this a likely birth reg
James Warren march qtr 1840 Monmouth vol 26 pg 90

I think I can see Rhoda, as Rodha, in 1841 in Manmoel, Bedwelty HO107/750/7 folio 5 pg 2. But the 1841 doesn't have places of birth or family relationships and I can't see the same family in 1851.

Once you have confirmed the names of the fathers, you can be more certain when searching parish records. There are transcriptions of Monmouthshrire records online
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~monfamilies/monprts.htm
But it's always possible that the families were non-conformist and so won't feature here, apart from marriages before civil registration.

If you can find the records you need transcribed, you can then get copies of the records from the record office in Cwmbran which may give extra info

Thanks Osprey,
I'll order the marriage cert now.

I think your 1851 find for James Warren might be the wrong one.

I have transcripts showing James W in 1871,81,91; but I cannot find him in 1861 or 51.
The transcripts I have, show him to be born about 1835 putting him at 16/17 in 1851.
I have found a JW in 1841 aged 7 living in Trevethin, which looks like it could be right.
HO107, 744 4/10 p12

I couldn't trace Rhoda before 1871 until you found Rodha at Manmoel in 1841.

Hopefully the marriage cert will help.

Many thanks,

Hencarrai

1851 for James has the right birth birth place - Raglan. He may have added a few years to his age to seem of a similar age to his wife. He wouldn't be the first, nor the last, to do so.

Hello Osprey,
I'm back.
I now have the marriage cert for James Warren and Rhoda Plumer, 1st Oct 1862; shows James dad as Henry and Rhoda dad as Thomas, both farmers.
No ages given and residence for both shows Llanhilleth. Cert shows Henry as a Haulier, which I guess could be at a coal mine to tie up with your 1871 census.
Any further suggestions?

Many thanks,
Hencarrai
