« on: Saturday 18 July 09 07:53 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
Does anybody recognize any of these characters working at "Hill End" Farm estate, Broadbottom, Mottram? Found them on a terrific site about Broadbottom history (Permission has been given to post photos!) here is their link

  http://www.broadbottomvillage.com/history%20servants.htm

I have also made a post on rootschat for assistance with dating the photos, here is the link

Hi.
In the 1881 census, my GG Grandad David Aspinall (born 1851, Glossop, Derbys) lived at Hill End with his family, wife Sarah (nee Hazeldine, born 1846ish) and their children, Harriet Ann (1878) and Herbert (1881) David was listed as a domestic gardener.
His older Brother Abel (1846) also lived at Hill End and was a domestic gardener. His wife Maria (1849) her son John Archer Aspinall (1873), Walker Aspinall (1873) Alice Aspinall (1875) James Jesse Aspinall(1878) Ellen Aspinall (1880) were with him.

The ladies who lived at Hill End House at the time were Ann Chapman, widow,(aged 72) and her daughter Alice (aged 37)

I think the pictures are from earlier than this, unfortunately.  :'(  I would have loved for one of those people to be `mine`.

Thanks for the info about the website  :)

I will have a look at the website you mention.
Blackbird - Swalwell, Durham
Aspinall - Newton by Hyde, Ashton Under Lyne, Glossop, Westhoughton
Simpson - Hyde, Cheshire
Milne - Stonehaven, Scotland
Robertson - Dundee
Porter - Alnwick, Northumberland

Karen,

I hope you won't mind me sending this reply after seven years.  I just did a Google search for Hill End, Broadbottom and your piece came up.

I am connected with Broadbottom Cricket Club (formerly Hill End C.C.) and am currently researching the history with a view to publishing a book about it.  I have found the first match in 1881 in which your great-grandfather David and his brother Abel played.  I wonder if you have any photos of them both.  It could be that I could use them in the book.  This is not a commercial venture, by the way, just a very limited edition for members and anybody interested.  If you like I could send you the newspaper cutting with the scorecard of the first game.

Best wishes,

Malcolm
