Thanks Jan

I have the census record for this, but didn't get any further with it, as on my grandma's marriage cert. to Frederick Josiah - he states his father as being Walter Jones.............
He might have been lying because of being illegitimate tho'
I will keep looking. Thanks
Margaret

My thanks to everyone who has tried to help me in my search for Frederick Jones in Birkenhead.  I have decided to take a different tack, and go back to where I started my search, at PontypoolWorkhouse, S.Wales.  Wish me luck 8) :-*

Before you switch tack, 1901 has only one Walter Jones who could be of age to be Frederick's father - he's 51 and was born in Derbyshire.  His wife is Jane, born Denton Lancashire.

Denton is of course next to Ashton and might explain why someone from Birkenhead would meet someone from Ashton - visiting rellies perhaps?

This family (without Frederick but with son Alfred 21 and daughter Nellie 17, are living at 349 Price Street Birkenhead).

Thanks Paul, I think the Denton u mention is near to Ashton-under-Lyne. Not the same as my Ashton-in-Makerfield.
I actually hope I am back on track with Frederick, as I first of all found a birth cert. for only one Frederick Josia Jones in the whole of the 1891 cenus. He was born in the Workhouse at Pontypool, Monmouthshire, and in the census he was 1 yr old, with his mother Florence an unmarried mother in the workhouse still.

My Grandma always told me that Fred came from Wales, and my brother in Johannesburg has just confirmed that Fred was from Blackwood, which is part of the Pontypool area.

I think I got a bit lost in Birkenhead, because Fred & my grandma got married there, and his best man I think was brought up there, so I attached myself to this family of Jones's,  but STILL never found the right Fred.

So thanks anyway, I will keep in touch, as soon as I find some proof. I have joined the Gwent History Society, and hopefully someone researching the Jones's there will be able to help me.
Margaret

I have a cup and saucer given to Fred Jones dated 1868. It was presumably to celebrate the birth of his daughter Mary Edith who was born that year in Birkenhead. She died at 85 in Bramhall.
She was married to Frank Charles Halliday, and they were my grandparents.
