No luck at all from the Churches. The reply from St John the Baptist Church was:

Dear Carl,

We have done some research and I'm afraid I don't think we can help you.
I'm so sorry.
The church is open everyday and you would be very welcome to call.

Best wishes
John Russell

He must not have read my email or ????? I told him that I was in the Bahamas....how can I just pop in.

Hi Peter

Only 2 wow im surprised at that , so many Rance members born there and so few burials , do you think its worth me visiting to see the registry ? would they hold records at this church ?

Chelle

to both posters!

from Hertfordshire Fam Hist Soc published MIs for St John the Baptist,

there appears to be only one Bowles ref

a plaque in the vestry-
" Mr Leonard BOWCLES? Died 9 Mar 1768 aged 60"

there are 5 Rance refs

Sophia Allum dau of Mr and Mrs T Rance died 20 feb 1911 aged 38
Frank Rance died 19 feb 1851 aged 69, also Ella died 28 dec 1980 aged 96
Sarah Rance died 19 May 1921 aged 72
Matthew |Rance died 11 Oct 1923 aged 71, wife Emma died 16 mar 1929 aged 74

and a Cyril Rance on the 39-45 war memorial plaque

I was there a few years ago and discovered that the very scant inscription in this pamphlet for a great great etc of mine in fact said a great deal more- hard to read, but definately on there! and the church was closed (  saturday PM!!)

Thanks Sally!

I'm curious about the spelling "BOWCLES" instead of BOWLES. Just a typo?

I think the transcriber can't read it, hence the question mark-  i wonder if its says BOWOLES reflecting a pronounciation??
