Mystery Boarder 1911 census
« on: Tuesday 21 July 09 19:06 BST (UK) »
I have found my aunt Francis Eleenor (should be Eleanor) Davies on the 1911 census living in Hull, Yorkshire with her son Thomas William Davies aged 1 and Ada Gertrude Davies Aged 7 - Boarder - born Southend on Sea, Suffolk.

We are fortunate in having two of Eleanor's daughters still with us and neither of them have ever heard of Ada Gertrude although one sister - now deceased - was called Catherine Ada so there looks as though there must be a family connection.

We are all curious as to who this mystery boarder was as i haven't been able to trace any of the family in this area. Could anyone give me advice as to where to go from here please?

Marian

Hi Marian

Her birth certificate may give you a clue.  :)

The nearest I can see on freebmd is Ada Gertrude Davis - Sep. 1/4 1902  Solihull 6d 633  ::)

It all depends on how curious you are!

Did your Aunt have any sisters/half sisters? Your best bet is to get Ada Gertrudes birth cert.

I tracked the mother of a child who in 1901 was living with a half aunt. Differant surnames too. Found her birth which gave me the mother and her marriage.

Southend -on sea is in Essex, so I think only a Cert. would show how true the
entry is,especially as Lee has found a near entry

Possibility too that she was a nursechild, an informal adoption.

I would be a bit wary of that particular birth entry as Solihull is near Birmingham and not anywhere near Southend, though that is Essex not Suffolk so it is all a bit odd.  She would also be older than 7 if that one is correct.

I've just down loaded my e mails and was amazed at the response - many thanks to everyone for your interest.

I would be prepared to go for a birth certificate but it all seemed so vague - should not Southend on Sea be Essex?  I looked on ancestry for the birth but like you couldn't find anything definate.

I shall keep thinking about this one.

Thanks again - Marian

hi Tazzie

My Aunt's maiden name was Marshall.  I haven't come up with any one by the name of Roberts - Pity - but thanks for looking.

Hi,

I have looked on Ancestry and found the following:

Name:  Gertrude Davies
Birth:  7 Feb 1905
Death:  Jun 1996 - Southend On Sea, Essex

Register No:  D73B

District and Subdistrict:  4751D

Entry No:  130

This is a death notice so applying for the death cert might give some clues as to who she was.  It was quite usual for many people to be known by the middle name which could be the answer in this case.  However, as this is a death notice it could be that this is a married surname.

Yes, Southend-On-Sea is in Essex but I notice that some entries on Ancestry birth records state for example West Ham/Essex/Suffolk.  I don't know why.

I can't find any birth entries for an Ada or a Gertrude in Southend that could apply.

Regards
