Aussie looking for O'Shaughnessy family
« on: Sunday 27 February 05 20:40 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

My name is Kylie Ramsdale I'm Australian trying to research my family, I was wondering if anyone could help me in looking for my great great great grandmother Isabella and her family.
The information that I have so far is....
Her name is Isabella O'Shaughnessy, O'Shannessy, O'Shannassy she was born in 1834 in Galway Ireland her parents were Martin & Maria and they were both died before 1850 and left Isabella an orphan. Then she was send to England (don’t know why?), left England on Sunday 28th Oct 1849 on a ship called the Thomas Arbuthanot “Plymouth” and arrived in Australia on Sunday 3rd of Feb 1850 she was known as one of  "The Irish Orphans".  Apparently a lot of Irish orphans were shipped to Australia to be servants?
What I’m really looking for is some history on Isabella, her parents and the family name. Also it would be great if anyone knows any web pages that can help me with researching my family that doesn’t cost anything.

Hope someone can help me with this.

Kind regards,

Kylie  ;D

Hello Kylie,

The web site gives a general history of the O'Shaughnessy Family
http://www.tip.net.au/~mos/oshaugh.htm -

I regret I can't find e-mail addresses for these organisations. I suppose snail mail is better than nothing.
A member of one of these societies may be able to assist with information about Isabella and her parents.

East Galway Family History Society Ltd
Woodford Heritage Centre
Main Street
Woodford
Co. Galway

Galway Family History Society West Ltd.
Research Unit, Venture Centre
Liosbaun Estate
Tuam Road
Galway

The web site below may have a few more addresses that may be useful to you.

Best Wishes,   Christopher

Hi there!

I noticed an O' Shaugnessy from Kilkerrin, Co. Galway on the 1881 census in England, if that's any help....

I know it's needle in a haystack really....
