Researching my relatives
« on: Wednesday 22 July 09 14:23 BST (UK) »
I have been looking into a particular ancestor of mine, Alfred j Parr who was an anzac in world war 1 but was from the loughborough area.  this has led me to trying to find more information about the rest of his relatives and extended family.  can anyone shed any light on how I should best do this?

Hello and welcome.

I am sure you will enjoy researching yuor family, as indeed we all do on here. And you will find lots of help here if and when you need it.

what do you know about Alfred already? Do you know his date of birth, or approx year of birth? Do you know his parents names? Did he marry? if so, when and to whom? etc etc.
Let us know all you have, and hopefully we can see if there is more to find and point you in the right direction of where to look. Hopefully if we can trace a birth cert for him, and can find his parents we will soon be back to the censuses and all the info they can offer ....!

Thanks for replying.  He was born in Beeston, Notts in 1894, parents Elizabeth and John Parr.  His mother then remarried to a Charles Newbon and I found them in the 1901 census as living in Loughborough.  I am trying to find out more about Elizabeth's roots, and also what happened to Alfred's siblings from her first marriage (John and Archibald, I believe).  I am also interested in finding out roughly when he moved to Australia, why, his address there and more about what he did before enlisting in the AIF in 1915.  This is just the start I think as my parents keep coming up with more names of extended family, one step at a time though!

1901 is certainly interesting!

RG13 2977 11 13
19 Ratcliff Rd

Charles Newbon 45 Driller bn Easton Northants
Elizabeth wife 32 bn Beeston Notts
James W Newbon 20  bn Easton Northants
Mary E 15 bn Loughborough
Alfred Parr son 7 bn Loughborough
Archibald Parr 3 bn Loughborough
John Parr 3 bn Loughborough
Mabel Barber 5 bn Leicester
Charles Newbon 5mths bn Loughborough.

All are described as sons and daughters.

From the ages it looks as if James and Mary were HIS children from a previous marriage; Alfred, Archibald and John are HERS from a previous marriage; and Charles is THEIRS from this marriage - which leaves Mabel Barber as a complete mystery!
But we must not assume!

Probably just coincidence, but there is an 1899 marriage of Charles Newbon, and on same page there is a Sarah Barber..........  could be some link  ;)
