Could this photo have been taken in SA
« on: Thursday 23 July 09 07:16 BST (UK) »

My great grandfather who was Australian, travelled backwards and forwards to South Africa from Australia between 1900 - 1910.  My grandfather and two great aunt's were born in Cape Town.   This photo, which includes my great grandfather is a mystery to the family, we are trying to determine where it was taken.

I know it's a long shot,  ::) ::) since there are no buildings in the photo to give a clue as to where it may be........ regardless I am wondering if anyone could determine if there is any likelihood that it was taken somewhere in South Africa.   ??? ???

Kind Regards,

Aussielass

Hello Aussielass

The four gentlemen are sitting amongst the fronds of what are commonly known as "Tree Ferns", in South Africa, of which there are quite a few.

Even in modern times, I have seen small thickets of them. So, I would say, it is quite possible that this photograph was taken in South Africa.

cheers

Hello Danchaslyn,

Thanks for your comments, and observations  :) :) since my original posting I have obtained a scan of the back of the photo, which I will post here to see if anyone can confirm where it may have been sent from.

Kind Regards

Hello Aussielass

The problem we have here, is that Tree Ferns (Cyatheales, sub class Cyatheatae) grow wild in sub-tropical regions, such as areas in New Zealand, Tasmania,  AND  certain parts of South Africa.

In SA, I saw them wild in areas of what is now known as Kwa-ZululNatal, formerly Natal, and probably the British Colony of Natal when your ancestor was about.

But, I also saw them wild, in forests outwith the sub-tropical regions of SA, in SA!

The feathery plant in the foreground of the pic is similar to Fynbos, found in the Southern Cape and Cape of SA.

All old post cards I've seen of SA showed people or town scenes, not flora.

Perhaps it was sent from New Zealand to Tasmania?

Cheers
