That's 1871, not 1861, so my theory still stands

I have a feeling that it will take an investment of £7 in one of the birth certs to prove or disprove my idea. I've come to a dead end looking for a marriage - perhaps they didn't

I think I've cracked it.

On the 1861 census there's a John Jackson living in Whittlebury St, St Pancras with his brother in law & wife who would have been his sister.

The wife's name is Elizabeth Rolfe who was the witness at Emma Jackson's marriage in 1855 to John Jordan.  Therefore Emma had a sister Elizabeth & a brother John, both showing as born in Albury, Hertfordshire.

The 1841 census shows the family in Albury, John the father, agricultural labourer, Charlotte, his wife, & 4 children including Emma. The other 2 children John & Elizabeth would probably have left home by this time.

Well done David for putting me on the right track, now I can trace the Jackson's back.

Good find Brian!

And of course when Emma and her husbands-to-be stayed in Whittlebury St prior to her marriages, it wasn't at some cheap and nasty lodging house, but rather, with her sister. In 1851 they were still in Whittlebury St enumerated as ROFF. They may have been married at Southwark on 4 Sept 1842, John Roff 27 bricklayer father George bricklayer, and Eliza Jackson 25 father John labourer

Mind you, I'd still like to see a birth cert of one of the Lee children!

If it will help, I can try to send for one of the Lee birth certificates.  It just takes awhile to get to me as I'm presently in Oklahoma, USA.

Brian's dotted the i, it would cross the t if you got the birth cert Bruce! At least then you'll be on firm ground to take the Jacksons further back (and perhaps discover some cousins too)

Hi David & Bruce.

When Abraham Kennerley died in 1869 he was living in Hale Street, Poplar.

On the 1891 census for James & Emma Lee, the daughter Emma Lee is shown as born in Wade Street, Poplar.

These 2 roads were next to each other so I think it's probably a safe bet that Emma did marry James Lee or at least have 3 kids by him.

The fact she seemed to have been around this area a fair bit & had 3 spouses, 6 children, one of which she left behind with his grandparents, makes me wonder what her social life was as the 2 roads above are a stones throw away from the East India Docks.
