Mckay 1901 census
« on: Friday 24 July 09 07:32 BST (UK) »
I have located my Grandmothers birth  certificate  (Jane McKay 25th May 1895)
Also her parents marriage certificate 25th Dec 1892
William McKay to Margaret Williamson.
I  would like to be able to find them on the 1901 census to see who else was in the family, but have had no luck so far.
Can anyone help please??

Thank you  Evie and Amber for getting back to me.

On Jane's birth certificate it has Dalkeith Edinburgh.
Her father William is a colliery laborer and he and Margaret were married in South Leith.
I do know that the family moved to the South Shields area before Jane married in 1920.
Thank you for your help.
Regards
Jeang

Evie, they are my family.........I wonder where William is ....but thats another piece of the puzzle.
Its quite odd really, my mother has always thought it was spelt McKie and Jane's fathers name on the marriage certificate is McKie, but Jane's birth certificate is McKay and now you have found another spelling.....it all adds  to the intrigue of family trees.
I would like to say a special thank you to you and say how pleased I am I found the chat room this morning.  I will be a constant visitor now.
Thank you

You are very welcome  :)

If you can give William's approx year of birth and birth place we may be able to track him down for you. I did try this morning but there were too many without knowing a little more about him.

Evie,

All I have is that he stated he was 36yrs of age on his wedding certificate and that was in 1892, so that would make him born around 1856  :)

Hi Jeang

Have you looked at William and Margaret's 1892 marriage cert? If so, what names does it show for his parents? This will help you find his birth entry and also where he was born which will come in handy when searching for him on the 1901 census.

Don't worry about the spelling of McKay  :) You are likely to find many variations on the spelling on documents and census entries (Mac/McKie/Kay etc). A sign of the times with spellings being very fluid and not as rigid as they are today. When searching on Scotlands People, always good the use the wildcard option at the very least on the M*C to pick up on either spelling of this part of the name.

Monica  :)
