Hi! Monica,
Thank you for that, I will remember to use the wild card option.
William 's father was James and his mother was Ann, I can't  read her maiden name . Looks like Befona?)They married in South Leith, Edinburgh.
Thank you for getting in touch.

IGI back up again  :)

Can't see anything for William's birth around 1855 +/- to those parents. Wonder if his birth was just pre 1855 and the start of official registration in Scotland. Not all birth were registered before this date. What was the occupation of James, William's father?

James McKay 33, Operative Mason, b. Dumfries
Ann B McKay 29 b. Calandie, Perthshire
William McKay 8 b. Glasgow

Address: 158 Kelvinhaugh St, Anderston, Glasgow Barony

This looks like the same couple in 1871:

James McKay 52, stone mason, b. Dunfries, Dumfrieshire
Anne B McKay 40 b. Callander Perthshire

Address: Main Street, Kilmadock Perthshire

And perhaps their son William in 1871:

John Smith 31
Marg Blodie Smith 42
Aron Black 10
James Black 21
Ann William Black 20
Andrew Black 1
William McKay 18, boarder, coal miner, b. Glasgow

Address: 86 Kilmaurs Rd, Kilmarnock Ayrshire

What would really help at the moment would be to get confirmation of William's mother's surname. Can you post a small section of the image on here where her maiden name is given.

You can also contact SP on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/contactus/form.aspx?issue=24 and ask them for an enhanced image of that section. SP are very good at responding to queries like this and will normally respond within 48 hrs. Make sure you include the GROS ref for the image you viewed for ease of reference.
