still looking for Ada!!
« on: Friday 24 July 09 08:07 BST (UK) »
Hi, can anyone tell me what may have happened to the illegitimate daughter of a young blind woman in the early 20th century? Her mother married in 1912 but no one seems to know much about the baby she'd had previously. Would she have been placed in an orphanage or sent to the colonies? If so would there be any record of it? The child was called Ada Adelaide James. Her mother was Ada Gooding or Goodwin Smith and her birth certificate states her father was Edward James. Ada was born in East Ham in 1906. I have her birth certificate but can't find any other records for her. ANYTHING would be very gratefully received. Many thanks.

Hi,

There is an Ada A James who married Walter Jarrett in West Ham in 1929. Don't know if this is your Ada, but she would have been about 23 years old so a possible. The reference is 4a 76 December Qtr. West Ham.

Thanks for the replies. The marriage is a bit of a long shot but I'm going to get the certificate anyway and see what it turns up. Many thanks.  :D

Thanks for the information everyone. I have Ada's marriage certificate and she did indeed marry Walter Jarrett who was a crane driver at the time of his marriage. The married in St Bartholomew's Church. Does anyone know if the parish records would tell me where Walter was born? Walter's father was called James who was a labourer.  Any more info would be much appreciated and thanks again for the previous help.

Glad that long shot was worth it!!

No parish marriage records I've ever seen give a place of birth unfortunately - normally just the town of residence - or the full address at the time of marriage.

Did the marriage cert give his age - another long shot but if he had no middle names there was a birth registered for a Walter Jarrett in 1905 in Romford (the next registration district east from West Ham) -

Would make him a similar age to Ada

Have you looked for Walter and family in the 1911 census - or his father in the 1901?

Good Luck
Sue

Also - if he was a fair bit older than Ada -

Walter Jarrett
Year of Registration:    1893
Quarter of Registration:    Jan-Feb-Mar
District:    West Ham
County:    Essex, Greater London
Volume:    4a
Page:    245

NO - FORGET ABOUT THIS ONE - appears to have died in the same qtr - sorry

Cheers
Sue

Thanks for that info Sue, I wasn't sure about the geography of Essex so I'll get that birth certificate for Walter Jarrett because he was born in 1905. I did look in the census for 1911 and, although I found an entry that may have been Walter's father James, there is no mention of Walter. Thanks again.
