Hi  Susan,

I feel it will be near on impossible to try to work out all Canham's in Maitland who may have hailed from Suffolk. If they travelled as assisted immigrants there County or even parish origin may be listed but this will not tell us if they settled in West Maitland.

I note from your other thread

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,394252.0.html

There were a John and Hannah in Maitland having Children in the 1850s. Are you certain that Ann S Who married William New is in fact your Annie and not the daughter of this couple?

There are many Carhams arriving in Sydney. It is possible to work out if some of these assisted immigrants hail from Suffolk but not the unassisted and there are hundreds of those on passenger Lists.

A quick look at assisted there is a John arriving in 1855 aged 32 single but he is from Cambridge, a William from Cambridge arrived in 1857 - he said he had a cousin John in Wellington St Sydney. Norfolk and Lincolnshire are also prevalent in the assisted lists. I see an Alfred from Suffolk arriving in 1852 aged 19 (parents William and Mary Ann, parish not stated) Sticking to correct spelling, he is the only one I can easily spot listing Suffolk in these mid 1800's lists.

Cheers Kris  :)

Hi,

On the Electoral Roll for 1878-9 at West Maitland, there is:

Line 186
John CANHAM at Raglan Street (a housholder).  No others with that surname on that particular roll.

Hope that helps!

JM
