Are there any free census sites??
« on: Saturday 25 July 09 13:03 BST (UK) »
I am currently unemployed and wanted to spend my free time (when not job searching), looking for my ancestors. However every single census site wants me to pay and I just haven't got the money to spend.

Are there are free census sites out there??

The 1881 census is free to search at http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp

You could also try FreeCEN  http://www.freecen.org.uk/ - but their coverage is quite limited (though growing steadily http://www.freecen.org.uk/statistics.html)

There are some online transcriptions for some areas.  Have you looked at the resources sections of the county boards?  I know there are some links to some areas of Hampshire.  But this may not be want you want of course.

You could also try FreeCEN

Apologies, I see from one of your previous postings that you already know about this site.

I am sure that if you post specific requests on the county boards you will find a helpful RootsChatter willing to look things up for you.  I know I did. :)

In the meantime good luck with the job search.

Have you taken advantage of the Ancestry free 14 day trial yet? You do need to give a credit card number and make sure that you cancel the trial BEFORE the 14 day trial finishes or you will be charged the annual fee.

A partner or other relative may also like to sign up for this using their name and credit card and then let you use their free trial.  ;)

And as well as A******y.co.uk (UK site) you may also be able to try the free trial of A******y.com.au (Australian site) and possibly even A******y.com (American site).

But don't forget to cancel before 14 days!!!!  ;)

PS. I see an ad for this at the top of this page at the moment. Ooops, it's gone now.

I wish that, just once and for all, and for the record, someome would explain why they find it necessary to write Ancestry with asterisks.
