1841 / 1851 or PR: BENSON & VATCHER / VACHER
« on: Monday 28 February 05 15:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

from the 1861 census, I have John and Fanny BENSON:

Name   Relation Gender Age (Born) Birthplace Occupation
John  Benson Head  Male  26  (1835) Blandford St. Mary, Dorset Cooper
Fanny  Benson Wife  Female 25  (1835) Blandford, Dorset

Their eldest child, Frederick was 7 in 1861, so John and Fanny were probably not married in 1851.  Fanny's maiden name was VATCHER or VACHER or VACHRE

I have already scoured the Dorset OPC site, but although there is a lot there from 1861 onwards, I can't find anything before that.

Can any anybody see them in the 1841 or 1851 censuses or any other details in parish registers, please.
Anything on Fanny BENSON neé VATCHER or VACHER would be especially interesting, as I am hoping to establish a link sometime to DebPat's VACHERs (in: one name studies)

Thanks,
Bob

Thanks Nicky !!

That's them,

John Benson is my daughter's ggg-grandad !

Fanny is very elusive.  We know definitely that she was called Fanny - my father-in-law used to sit at her knee, while she told him the family history !!  Great huh ?? unfortunately he was only six at the time and now, 80 years on, he is unsure about most of it !

One day I shall find her, or her marriage cert. to John Benson and discover her maiden name
(Vatcher, Vacher, Vachre, or possibly even Hardy ??)

Thanks again,
Bob

Hi Bob

I have had a look at the 1841 for a Fanny Hardy and there is a Francis Hardy in Blandford age 5. The census image is quite hard to read but I will gladly email it to you if you PM me your email address.

The census image looks like this I think! All the children were born in county.

Henry Chandler, age 26, box maker, not born in county
Jane Chandler, age 31 born in county
Frederick Hardy age 14
Sarah Hardy age 11
Caroline Hardy age 8
Francis Hardy (female) age 5

address Bryanston Street
parish of Blandford

HO 107 0294

Hope this may help

Nicky

Hi Alli,

thanks for that information.  I think I shall have to save my pennies and look for Fanny and John Benson's marriage cert, or maybe the birth certs. of their children. That will finally tell me Fanny's maiden name, and then I can carry on from there.

Thanks again,
Bob

Hi Alli,

If Fanny Hardy is "my" girl, then this could indeed be her. I shall add this info to the pile.

Unfortunately my Father-in-Law is very uncertain whether Fanny was a Vachre or a Hardy, but he remembers some sort of connection between them.

As I said, I have to save up for a certificate or two and find out Fanny Benson's maiden name !

Thanks again,
Bob
