Where might a sailmaker live? this would be around 1949, so not so long ago. Are there specific yacht makers in the UK? Sorry if this is a daft question  :-[

I just did a search on Yell.com and it came up with 126 hits, all round the UK.

Sorry, didn't notice the date you were interested in. The ones on Yell.com were around the coast. In 1949, there wer probaly a lot of sailing barges around as well, so London would certainly have sailmakers.

hi ken there is a sailmaker in sunderland speedings they were based in wickham street which is in monkwearmouth with in walkong distance from the river were the shipyards were.when there was not a demmand for sails they branched out making flags, tarpoleings ,wet suits, bnners and even had orders to recover tackling bags and post protecters from local rugby clubs.2 or 3 years ago they moved from the origenal site to an industrial estate in the grangetown area of the city.

Thanks Neil, that's quite interesting information. Not so much call for sails these days, I suppose,  so they had to branch out into other stuff.

There are sail & oar makers in my husband's tree and they lived by the Thames in Putney (50+ years before the date you mention though).  In one census a newly married son  seems to be living in the boathouse.
