John senior Turner
« on: Monday 27 July 09 20:40 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,
Could anyone help I have an ancestor John senior Turner b Dec 1853 Ecclesall B. d Dec 1906 52 Sheffield, the problem I have is that although I can find him in several census records 1861 to 1901 and know he was married to mary anne between 1871 and 1881 I cannot find any record of where or when this happened or any info of her maiden name.
           Hope someone can help, thanks

many thanks for the reply,
I had seen thiis marriage on familyrelatives.com but hadnt progressed with it due mainly because of no mention of senior and the misspelling of anne but it does fit the fact that in the 1881 census they had a daughter born in 1875 harriet j. .

thanks again

If they had children then purchase one of the birth certs, you will find her maiden name on one of them. The problem of course is that it's quite a common surname and it helps if a child had a more unusual forename.

I have the Turner name connected to Sheffield and Ecclesall B from around about 1868 (a marriage) though i suspect the family may have origins in Staffs and the Birmingham area prior to the marriage. At the moment though i haven't really chased them down through certs etc so i can't be absolutely certain.

I'd be tempted to go with a birth cert for Harriet, although in the index there isn't a Harriet J born in  Sheffield or Ecclesall there is a Harriet born in 1875 in the Sheffield reg district.

You could always apply for the cert via the Sheffield registrar and say mother should be "Mary Ann" or "Mary Anne" and they wouldn't charge extra for the search.

On Census records who do you have as his parents in 1861?

Good idea I don't know why I didn't think about that in the 1881 census Harriet J was born in Leeds with Henrietta born 2 years later in ecclesfield. Trish the following was the info I got from Roots UK 1861 census:

1861 census Roots UK
John Senior Turner
Age    7
Year of Birth    c. 1854
Relationship     Son
Occupation Scholar
Birth Place   Sheffield Yorkshire
Address    Chapeltown
District    Wortley & Penistone
Administrative County    Yorkshire

Turner John c.1814 47 Plumber & Glazier Sheffield Yorkshire
Turner Harriott c. 1814 47 Plumber Wife Sheffield Yorkshire
Turner Lydia Senior c. 1841 20 Servant    Ecclesfield Yorkshire
Turner Albert Jubey c. 1837 24 Labourer At Iron Works Sheffield
Turner Henrietta    c. 1851 10 Scholar    Ecclesfield Yorkshire
Turner John Senior  c. 1854 7  Scholar    Sheffield Yorkshire

Hope this helps

Dont worry I am still looking at this and have found a possible marriage for John and Harriott 1833 on the IGI.

1861 Census on Ancestry has son as Robert not Albert born c. 1837.

I have tried to find them 1851 without success.

I think the cert of Harriett or Henrietta is the way to start

Better luck 1841 :)

1841 Census
Chapeltown, Ecclesfield
HO107/1327/6/Ecclesfield

Jn TURNER, 25, plumber and glazier, born in county, yes
Harriett, 25, yes
Robt, 4, yes
Mary, 2, yes
Lydia, 7mths, yes

Possible marriage;
John TURNER
Harriett NEWTON
21 August 1833, Bradfield, Yorkshire

I think Mary is Mary Crosford, with husband Joseph on 1871 census living with John and Harriett.
