Gadget is interested to find out how and why her Welsh folk travelled to the North-East in 1800s.

Although it is usually difficult to find specific reasons for a flit, the Blyth-born RICHARD FYNES in his book ( 1873), "The Miners of Northumberland and Durham" covers various drifts of folk to and from the NBL & Durham Coalfield in 1800s.

Thank you, Michael  :)  I'll try and get hold of the book.  (Just found  and ordered a second hand copy supplied by our major census supplier)

I'm also going to try to do an analysis of the censuses to look at the various patterns of movements. I've already started on the N. Wales to Durham and I've also identidied quite a few Durham born people on the Chirk censuses.

Just an update that may be of interest to others.

I received the book this morning and have been reading through various sections.

It seems, as I suspected, that my 3 x great uncle might well have been lured to Durham as a potential strike breaker  :-\

During the Great Strike of 1844, the coal owners sent agents to all of the major coalfields to get men to move to the area. They seemed to have been promised large wages and housing. It was only when they arrived that they discovered that the local miners were on strike. Some went back (often given money to return by the striking miners), some remained.

I would hate to think that Isaac was a strike breaker, especially given the subsequent involvement of the Par(r)ishes in the trade union and co-op movement, the ILP and so on in North Wales.

Gadget ,
I think this is a link to my family. Margaret Ann Parrish born Oct 1845, Belmont, Durham, married Thomas Cowen and emmigrated to US  in 1883 Their daughter Mary Alice married Henry Mason Wheatley. If this is her family, Isaac is my husband's 3rd great grandfather. All the locations in Durham match. Do you have any info to confirm? S

Gadget, This appears to be a family link. My husband's 2nd great grandmother was Margaret Ann Parrish married to Thomas Cowen.  Margaret was born Oct 1845 in Belmont. Durham. She married Thomas Cowen and emmigrated to US in 83. Their daughter Mary Alice married Henry Mason Wheatley. Do you have any info that could confirm this? S

Hi  :D

It looks as if it could well be. I need to check up on the info that I've gathered but at the moment I'm having problems with vision, etc. so can't scroll through my info.

I'll PM you. It would be nice to know that there's another relative out there  :)

Hi again

I can't seem to find a birth registration or baptism for Margaret Ann. I can't go through the records at the moment.

Have you got a reference?
