Different surname on certificates
« on: Wednesday 29 July 09 09:21 BST (UK) »
My great gran was Elizabeth Maxwell and she died in 1927 - on her death certificate it shows her father as William Young and her mother is shown as Sophia Young with maiden name BARR, however on William and Elizabeth's marriage certificate it clearly shows Sophia's maiden name as being NEILSON.

I have a direct link to Sophia's parents using the name NEILSON - is BARR a mistake or does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you!

Hi TrinityMac

One possible reason is that a Sophia Nielson was married first to someone called Barr and then to William Young?

Do you have a marriage certificate for William Young and Sophia?  If not, I would suggest you search for that and see what it says.

If you need further help, could you supply also where they lived/were born, including the county?  If it might be several places, then supply all of them!

Hi  :)

The informant  who gave the information on the death certificate would be more removed from Elizabeth's parents than she was so it's more likely that Elizabeth gave the correct information on her marriage cert.

However, sometimes errors are made. Do you have a birth record for Elizabeth to substantiate one or other surname?

Hi

Thanks for replies!

The marriage certificate for Sophia & William shows Sophia as a spinster - they were married in the Parish of Carnwarth, Lanarkshire.  I don't have either of their birth certificates.

The informant of Elizabeth's death certificate shows the informant as being William Young, her son.

Hi

Do you have an approximate date of birth for Elizabeth?  Have you got her on any of the censuses?

I'll go and have a look around if you can give me this info.

The IGI (extracted) shows the marriage of William Young and Sophia Neilson in Carnwath 'about' 15th June 1866.

I think Elizabeth's son might have got confused - maybe her husband's mother was Barr :-\

Elizabeth was born approx 1875.

The name Barr just isn't anywhere further back??? ???

I have Sophia & William's marriage as 15th June 1866.

It could have been a simple error......................

Thank you!

I am just trying to get a census record for Elizabeth
