Unsure of Occupation in Cotton Mill (LANCS)
« on: Wednesday 29 July 09 13:34 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Could anyone reading help me decipher an occupation on the 1841 census?

The occupation appears to be within a cotton mill (in Ashton-in-Makerfield) and reads, COTTON YARN RUL?? (possibly Ruler but I've never head of this).

Below is an image from the census...

Does anyone know what this occupation might be?

Many thanks for reading. Best Wishes, Rowan Tree  :)

I think the same.    After the fluffy cotton is spun into a long length of yarn, the cotton yarn is then wound around a Reel (or bobbin).

Hi Jennifer and Rena,

Thanks for your help and super quick posts  :D .

I feel rather silly now. I was convinced the double "E" was a letter "U". Doh!

Cotton yarn reeler makes perfect sense. Thank you both very much.

Sometimes its the obvious ones that get us  ;) .

Best of Wishes, Rowan Tree  :)
