1911 Census
« on: Friday 31 July 09 18:11 BST (UK) »
I am in possession of the 1911 census for my Great Grandad James Wells.

It lists him as a widower with 3 children which all tie in with what I have.

However on the second line underneath all the children there is another person listed.  She is listed as Mother 67 widow housekeeper.  Why is she down as mother as she is not James Mother.

Thanks

James married Eliza Cornforth in Thirsk 1900.

Residence was Tom Thumb Farm. Brandsby, Easingwold.

I think the name of the lady is Jennie Eliza Cornorth or Barefork.

well, the surname sounds right to be M-in-L ?

In 1891, Eliza Cornforth was at home with parents Wm and Eliza - in Low Hawsker, Whitby District

RG12/3995; Folio 130; Page 1

Mum is age 45, born c1846 - 'Newholin', Yorkshire (Newholm on 1901 census)

Does that match with the 67 year old you have ?

The place of birth on the 1911 census for the Mother is Scruton, Bedale, York

It is possible that it could be the same lady

Newholm is near Whitby and Hawsker

Scruton is as you say, near Bedale

Quite a distance away

I wasn't!  ;D

James was born Scruton too.  Maybe the lady is his mother and had remarried?

1881 census has James with grandparents and there's an unmarried daughter Eliza
