Mark Nicholls & family 1841 & 1851 census
« on: Monday 03 August 09 09:24 BST (UK) »
I am wondering if someone can locate my ancestor Mark Nicholls and his family in the 1841 and 1851 census.
Mark was born in about 1792 in Bloxwich he married in 1817 in Shareshill to Frances (Fanny) Ross.  They had about 10 children all born in Bloxwich and Baptized at All Saints Bloxwich.  Some of the children's names were Henry b. 1818,  Mark b. ?, Enoch b. 1833, Emma b. 1835, Joseph b. 1837, Thomas b. 1838.
My problem is that the church register is very smudged and several of the names are hard to read.  I thought that a look at the census records may shed some light on the children's names
I would be most grateful of some help.

Regards

Gertie

Hello Tati,

Thank you for your time searching for my ancestors.  It was very much appreciated.
I am still wondering where all the children are. Missing are Enoch, Emma and Thomas.  Two of the smudged names look like, Ann b. 1824 and Jerome b. 1826, but I can't be certain. They could also be living or working away from home.  The mother Frances may also have died before 1841.

Thanks again

Gertie

Are you sure they survived? The only Thomas Nic*ls born Bloxwich I can see on later censuses was a little older, and the 1841 census suggests that he was the son of Charles and Ann. (FreeBMD shows a death in Dec 1838 for a Thomas Nicholls - shame ages weren't at death weren't shown in the index at the time)

Could the 1827 born be called Jabez by any chance? The 1841 census shows a Jabez Nicholds age 13 in Walsall, a Bet? Plater? Maker apprentice with Thomas Goodwin. Later censuses show his birth place as Bloxwich.

Thanks for that,  I have found Jabez Nicholls with his older sister Elizabeth Boulton (nee Nicholls) in the 1881 census.  He was unmarried and died in Walsall in 1904 aged 77 years.
