Underwoods/Walkeys of Blaenafon/Trevethin
« on: Monday 03 August 09 20:07 BST (UK) »
If anyone has Underwoods or Walkeys (yes, with a 'y') in their family tree and they come from the area around Blaenafon or Trevethin, please let me know.

Names of note -

Alfred born 1864 (Blaenafon)
Katy born 1868 (Blaenafon)
Frederick born 1870 (Blaenafon), m Mary Ann Pritchard 1894, died 1953
Valentine born 1874 (Blaenafon), m Elizabeth Williams 1900 (Toxteth park, Lancs)
Charles born 1875 (Newport), m Sarah Ann Hagan (nee East), possible further marriage, possible death in 1904.

Parents of above - Thomas Underwood born Abergavenny (1826-1892) and Catherine Walkey, born 1833, Trevethin.

Charles was my 2XG grandfather and I would like to find out what happened to him after he and my 2XG grandmother Sarah Ann went their separate ways.

Thank you

Hi
Have you got Charles info correct (do you have the marriage certificate giving m= to Sarah ann Hagon?)
Marriage Charles Underwood = sarah  ann hagon year 1891 Qtr2nd District Newport Mon vol 11a page 381.
On 1891 census
RG12/4373/47/36
19 George St Woolos Newport
Charles Underwood  boarder - Married ages 26yrs b <1865> Blaenavon Mon occup-Dock Lab
If charles Underwood is the one in the 1901 census he can't be married to Sarah  because they married in the 2nd qtr, also if Charles's birth as you have given it he would have been 16yrs age getting married.
I hope I am making this clear.
When I entered charles Underwood on 1891 census for monmouth he's the only one that came up , did try Glamorgan all charles married and older.
But If you do have marriage cert then I am wrong.
cheers cardiff ???

lol no, you are not stupid at all - thank you for replying and Im sorry its taken so long to acknowledge your posts.

Firstly - yes, I do have the marriage cert for charles and sarah ann. They are both within my grandmother's living memory (and she is still alive).

Secondly - the family you found on the 1881 census is my family, as is the 1891 couple. I have been to both Blaenavon and Broad Street (Trevethin, but actually in Abersychan). Sadly both the houses are no longer standing, and I am currently trying to find out what happened to the house in King Street. The Catherine on the census was a Walkey before she married Thomas.

The Charles you have found on the 1901 census is, I believe, the same Charles that married Sarah Ann. In 1901, Sarah Ann appears with her son and daughter from her first two marriages (she married a third time in 1917), using her first married name of Hagan and stating she was a widow. She was a bit of a naughty girl as her first husband can be found alive and well in 1901, as well as Charles, with his second wife and two children.

Thank you for your help. It does confirm what I already suspected but its nice to find someone objectively coming to the same conclusion as me!

Hello I am reseraching names  Sarah  Hagan who married a Wymer . Sarah also  married a James B Pritchard in 1869 in Kent and she later died in Nov 1874. She had a daugther with James Pritchard....  Any information on Sarah Ann Hagan or family would be greatly appreciated. The families are orginally from Norfolk Surrey  and Kent area.

On his marriage certificate states that his mother was Sarah Ann Hagan but on his death certitficate it states Mary Pritchard. I do know that Sarah was married to a James Pritchard and had a daugther  Harriett born in Kent 1869 England.Frederick also went by the name William. Any information great or small would be very much appreciated. As on your notice board you have similar names... I hope that their maybe a connection. Thanks

Hi Barnee
This is interesting isnt it?  :o
Im at work at the moment, but will look into this and get back to you as soon as I can. Give me a nudge at the weekend if I havent replied to you by then. I really do want to look into this - the whole Sarah Ann Hagon story fascinates me (I know she was a very naughty girl!). This may be a connection, however, to Sarah Ann's first husband, William Hurlow Hagan. I believe he moved to the south east at some point, but was living in the Bristol area when married to his former wife Annie Louisa Sainsbury.
I will contact you as soon as I get five mins to look into this.
Thanks for getting in touch  :D
