« on: Tuesday 04 August 09 11:49 BST (UK) »
any ideas where I can find any snippets re a French ? Sailor, being in Knutsford around 1939 to 1942. I know there were several Pow's camps in the area, also Knutford General Hospital no. 4 with German and Italian pow's. Possibly a French Canadian? Were they posted in Cheshire?? Possibly a free french sailor? any ideas. Have looked re Knustford hospital and have not come up with much, any pointers appreciated Nel. Sorry no name

There certainly were French sailors in Cheshire in WW2, but don't know much about them.  I was brought up in Little Budworth and we had Oulton Park next door, which was used as a "camp".  As far as I am aware - I was only a baby at the time - we had a variety of overseas visitors - French sailors, American soldiers, Italian POWs and finally Polish refugees.  I think that even the British Army were there at one time as well.  The huts were still there when Oulton Park opened as a racing circuit.

Tatton Park was used for parachute training in WW2 and this included Free French.
