stark and bannister
« on: Wednesday 05 August 09 23:47 BST (UK) »
I was told, by elderly relatives, that my Stark and Bannister families were travelling circus folk from Germany.
(In 1840 they were on the Wolverhampton  Canal Bank
and moved as far as Birmingham over the next 40 yrs.)
Do these names 'fit' or is this fiction rather than fact. ::)
Any help would be much appreciated.

Bannister looks good for it. Bob Dawson (Check it out) has them down as all around central england up until 1785.

So it's far from stretching the feasibility to suggest some may have crept that tad further up. Perhaps even that, and the possibility of becoming 'hidden' amongst the Showman community is why the name dropped off the radar then?
GAITES (Alverstoke / Bath Pre 1850)
CURTIS (Portsmouth & 1800's Berkshire).
BURGE (Dorset, Somerset and Hampshire)
HUNTLEY (Dorset, Hampshire, Sussex, 'Surroundings')
