Does anyone know if British soldiers based in Ireland would have to register
on the census of England or Ireland.

Hi,
According to various internet sources all British soldiers and any family serving in Ireland were included in the Irish Census. I believe that this was the first time this was done.

Regards

Browne, Barrett -Co.Armagh
Neil, Smyth _Co. Antrim

The soldiers were included but on most returns just initials were used for their names - see this example at Richmond Barracks in Dublin : http://www.rootschat.com/links/06uv/

I dont know which unit this is (looks like Rifleman PBa R Bde), but most of the soldiers are English.

a few of the barracks returns have the surname listed.
