My maternal Grandmother's maiden name was Suckling and her family were based in South Suffolk.

Interesting to see the "Nelson" connection as I was also informed of OUR supposed Nelson link at a recent family funeral.

It would appear that my (Maternal) Great Grandfather Suckling was the landlord of the Rose Inn at Lower Holbrook (now long closed) at the turn of the last Century and moved on to be the landlord of the Kings Head, Stutton at some time near to the Great War date wise as he was in situ there for the 1921 Census.

From the (very) little research done on that side of my family, they were in the Stoke area of Ipswich prior to moving down to the Rose Inn.

There was talk of them having moved down to Ipswich from Gorlestone however, this is not yet proven.

In the next few weeks I'm hoping to see both a 90 year old (no relation) whose childhood was Lower Holbrook (brain still as sharp as a razor) and definitely knew the Suckling family during the pre war years and Mother's last remaining sibling (brain ditto!!)  to glean as much information as possible before it's lost forever!!!

All the above has still to be confirmed or otherwise.

If anyone out there has any information on the Suckling that they are prepared to share with me, I would be eternally grateful as my Bayram research is becoming bogged down and takes up too much time.

Regards... Andrew.

Hi

I have Suckling ancestors from Suffolk and it is proving very difficult/impossible to trace them back past Henry Suckling born in 1830 in Needham Market, Suffolk. His wife was unusually named Enerctice - probably incorrect - but I can't find any trace of them before the 1861 census, either on the internet or in parish records. I am tracing the Mayhew family and related Frosts in Suffolk, mainly Ipswich Stoke area, Barking and Needham. If anyone has any leads I would be very grateful. My tree is on Ancestry,

Best wishes
Jen

Hi Sue

Thank you for looking this up. I did have this down as a possible record but had tended to dismiss it since he is recorded as having been born in Needham not Chelmsford in 1861 and I could not tie Henrietta up with Enerctice for sure. Both records give him as a railway worker and his son Henry also worked on the railways so I'm thinking it is correct. Thanks for the 'Mount' lead. I had spotted the marriage but had not connected it with the name Mount which now makes perfect sense since I recall 'Mount' as a family name in my mother's notes.
I will explore the Mount connection!
Best wishes

Jen

I have Sucklings in Finchingfield going back to 1664; but no Samuels. Do you gave a tree where I might find a common ancestor?

John

There were no Samuel Sucklings baptised in Finchingfield in 1771; the closest Samuel Suckling was baptised 18.09.1774, son of John & Sarah.
John & Sarah also had John 20.03.1768 and Sarah 10.01.1771
There were 3 other Suckling families having kids at the same time, but the only one with a Samuel & Sarah is John & Sarah
