Morebattle Tofts
« on: Friday 07 August 09 19:09 BST (UK) »
Hi

Can anyone tell me the origin of the term "Tofts"?  Also, is Morebattle Tofts the type of area where a shepherd might have plied his vocation in the 18th century?

Thanks.

Don't know the origin but Morebattle Tofts is a farm near Kelso, so definately would be shepherds.

Meant to say it is a 'sheep' area

Thanks, Terry.

I'd had a look, and it seemed to be mostly cattle, so I wasn't sure.

Coincidence time - yesterday's "Guardian" and today's "Scotsman" newspapers have run long obituaries of Jean Jones, editor, curator and artist, wife of Professor Peter Jones of Edinburgh University, who has died aged 74. Her maiden name was Roberton, and she was the daughter of Hamish and Chris Roberton of Morebattle Tofts.

I just so love these coincidences - as I dig deeper into my family history I am amazed at the coincidences which emerge.   Perhaps we should have a coincidence section!

History of the Name Tofts

From Old Scandinavian toft
'curtilage or homestead'; 'dweller at the croft or homestead'

Yes.....in the very earliest days of the town of Leith, the strips of land adjoining each house were described as tofts.

In older records of house sales ("sasines") you'll find houses described as being "on that toft or piece of land called ...".

In my home village of Cellardyke in Fife there is a street called Toft Terrace.

Hibee, after yesterday's 0-2 result against Hearts, are you not thinking of changing your nom-de-plume? "Our heroes", as my son calls them, are getting more dire by the minute (speaking as a long-standing Hibee myself). It's a good job we don't have a football thread here.
