1901 Census
« on: Sunday 09 August 09 11:37 BST (UK) »
I am trying to locate my Grandfather Neil MacKay (born 1870) in the 1901 census.  Neil came to the Mainland from the island of Harris between 1891 and 1901 with his brothers Murdo and Norman.  I can find Murdo in the 1901 census in Scotlands People but not Neil .  I have tried all spellings of his name.   Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi Irene

Do you happen to know his wife's name or was he single?

Many thanks for taking the time to reply to my post.  Unfortunately, he was single.  He is not in Harris with his family and not with Murdo his brother who is on the Mainland, working on a farm in Cawdor, Nairnshire.  This is most frustrating!!

Hi Irene

Yes frustrating I agree. At the moment the only 2 Neil Mackay's that I have come across one in Scotland and one in England census are married.

I will try to look again later for him.

Hi Irene :)

I still cannot find him. Can you give a little more background information on him please. When and where was he married and when did he have his first child, and their name and occupations that he has had.

Neil was born 1870 Isle of Harris and the only occupation I am aware of is Farm Servant/Ploughman.  Neil never married my grandmother and on his death certificate in 1945 he is down as bachelor.  My Dad was his only child and was born in 1931 when my grandfather was 60!!  I really appreciate all you help.

Hi Irene

Just a couple more questions. Where was your father born. Did he (Neil) remain in Scotland as far as you are aware all of his life?

My Dad was born at Waterloo which is near Auldearn, three miles from Nairn.  My Dad stayed in the Nairn area all his life.    At the time of my Dad's birth my grandfather did not live with them, he lived on a farm called Belivat which is in Ardclach but still Nairnshire.  When my grandfather died he lived with my granny and Dad in a cottage at Park Farm, Nairn.
