Confused!
« on: Monday 10 August 09 19:53 BST (UK) »

Hi all!

I'm researching my grandmothers family who were the French family from Oldbury in Warwickshire/Worcestershire (the counties change depending on the source!)
I've got myself very confused and wondered if fresh eyes will be able to help me! My grandmothers father was George French born 13 Oct 1883 in Langley and his father was also George French b abt 1851 in Oldbury. The confusion I have is surrounding George Seniors Father.
The folllowing is what i think happened, this is where i'm confused as i'm not experienced enough to back it up! What i think happened was George snrs father was also George b abt 1824 in Oldbury. He married Sarah Williams and had 4 children, Sarah ann (c.1847) George (c.1851) Elizabeth (c.1857) and Hannah (c.1858). Then i think that George died and his wife Sarah then married his brother Eli (b 03 Dec 1837.)
I can find a marriage for Eli and Sarah Williams which took place in Worcester on 11 Dec 1859.  I also found Eli's birth as above. I can't find any birth, marriage or death entries for George (1824) at all though. On the 1861 census George (1851) is living with his mother Sarah and his father is listed as Eli, but Eli is 22 and George is 9 so it leads me to believe Eli wasn't his biological father.
Another Rootschatter kindly found a lot of information for me about George and Eli form Parish records, but me being me i can't seem to find it!
I hope it isn't too confusing and someone will be able to help! Thank you in advance for your help!!

That sounds like a perfectly reasonable theory to me.  George senior, Eli and Sarah were all born in Tipton, Staffordshire according to the various censuses.  The IGI has this baptism for George there:

GEORGE FRENCH  Christening:  09 MAR 1824
Father:  GEORGE FRENCH  Mother:  ANN

1851 census has Eli at home with his parents, in Langley:

George French 56  coalminer bn. Nuneaton, Warwickshire
Ann French 55  bn. Tipton, Staffordshire
Eli French 13  coalminer bn. ditto
Thomas Rollason 22  son in law coalminer bn. Oldbury
Mary Ann Rollason 19  daughter bn. Tipton
Thomas Rollason 1 grandson bn.

Have you ruled this death out for George?

Deaths Dec 1857
French  George     Dudley  6c 111

Tipton came under Dudley registration district at that time and Eli and Sarah's marriage was also registered in Dudley

Thanks for all of your help!
When I looked up Eli it stated his mother as Nancy so too see her as Ann is a good sign! Ermintrude I hadn't found that death record for George! It seems likely date and location wise! Thank you very much I will persue further!!
