Hi Igor

Doc 4/1/1226 Ref 5206 is the mortgage bond which was for " Freehold land with buildings
situated in the suburb of Sydenham in Port Elizabeth, being lot No 5 of the divided piece of
land granted to the Town Council of Port Elizabeth on the 25 March 1862. It was then
transfered to Caeser Andrews on 22 June 1865 then to George Goldsmith on the 20 Oct 1879.
Measuring 112 square roods and 72 square feet.

Ernest appointed SS Hutton of Cape Town as the attorney and the Mortgage Bond was for
300 Pounds sterling

The doc was dated 29 August 1906 in Port Elizabeth and the witnesses were:
James Rowling and WW Matthews and of cause Ernest Edward Pay signed.

Thank you very much to Keithru and to Ouma for this further information.  Your help is very much appreciated.  :D

Keithru, I will try and track down Albert Edward Thistelton and Minnie Eliza to see if I can relate her to the Pay family.  There were a lot of Pays in Kent at the time and probably still are!

With regard to the Mortgage Bond, that's very interesting information. It would seem that this was land either for a house or for business - given the mention of buildingS.  I will research roods to see how big they are  ::)

I have the feeling that Ernest Edward remained in Africa until his death most probably in 1938 as per the other reference.

Am I able to look up telephone directories online for South Africa to see if there are any Pays still remaining in Port Elizabeth?

I am the great grandson of Albert Edward Thiselton, whose name appeared in this thread, and I was intrigued to learn that his father was born in Faversham. Does anybody have any further information on his roots?

Hi Igor, Hope your safe and sound?
Family Search recently published loads of new scanned files from the NA SA. Might help you?
Did help me on my quest for the African adventures of my gg father Arthur Pay (1865-1941) in Africa.
Happy hunting, my perhaps Viking relative;)

Thanks to genealogiepay, and to pampeon for these posts, and many many apologies to dthisel, whose post back in 2014 I seem to have missed entirely - not only did I not acknowledge it, I didn't follow up with any research on the Thiselton connection.

I will now have another look at the subject, and post here with anything further I find.
I seem to have the birth of son Horace Edward in 1917, but need to reconfirm where I got that date from in the first place.

Many thanks to you all and Happy New Year!

And just a footnote re the Thiselton/Pay South Africa connection -

having looked at Minnie Eliza Pay, it appears that her father George Pay originally came from Felpham, in Sussex.

My Pay family were firmly based in Kent from the late 18th throughout the 19th Century, and therefore there doesn't seem to be an immediate connection between the families.

In terms of the Thiselton family, it does appear that Albert Edward Thiselton's father was born in Faversham, Kent, where his father John Thiselton was a bookseller in the 1841.

However, despite my Kent connections, I cannot see a link between my family and the Thiselton family.

It seems that the Pay surname in South Africa is a coincidence.
