Gearstones near Settle

Trying to find further background info on Henry Staveley who was the gamekeeper at Gearstones on the 1871 census. Is this the ex-pub which is on the main road on the three peaks hike between Pen-y-ghent and Whernside?

There was a story of a construction worker on the railway viaduct who threw some explosive onto the fire at the pub and nearly brought the house down

I did a search.  There are lots of sites but this one says it was a shooting lodge at one time http://gearstones.com/history/

Mary Staveley 78   - Henry's mother which should help finding the previous generation

The address is Winnshaw - Ingleton and Henry is a gamekeeper.  The census entry is on the same sheet as High Gearstones Farm and Newby Head Inn.

Hi Derek,Just seen your query re Gearstones. Yes it is an outdoor centre now but it was an inn.
My Great Great grandfather Francis Whaley owned it and when the dynamite incident took place his daughter's father in law Francis Yates,who was also my Great Great Grandfather, was the innkeeper.

I saw a Time Team programme a while back about the construction gang temporary camp on the hill above the tunnel. They must have been close to the pub.
