COMPLETE - Joseph ARESTI
« on: Wednesday 12 August 09 09:36 BST (UK) »
Joseph ARESTI was a lithographer, born Bloomsbury, Middlesex in 1809. At Olveston in Gloucestershire in 1840 he married Emma SARJEANT. They had three known children, Louisa Clara born 1841, Julia Emma born 1843, and Rosannah born 1845. The three girls were all baptised at Machen, Monmouth, Wales on 17 Sep 1848, which is where Emma's mother and brothers were living.

Can't find Emma and Joseph in 1841, but have found them in Hammersmith in 1851.

In November 1857 Mr and Mrs, and the three Misses ARESTI arrived in Melbourne on the Neptunes Favourite.

Have found a couple of mentions about Joseph after that date, but nothing to confirm if they stayed in Melbourne. There is a 50 year old Mr ARESTI leaving Melbourne on the Sussex in Mar 1866 bound for London, which could be him. Age fits. If it was him did he come back. What happened to his wife and daughters.

Two of Emma's younger brothers Isaac and Henry SARJEANT both came to New Zealand about 1860, as neither appear in the 1861 census. No sign of Emma coming to NZ yet.

Hoping someone else has come across these names somewhere and can shed some light on what happened to them.

Have also posted on the Gloucester board - http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,398411.0.html

Thanks Jenn. I guess that answers that. Looks like the Mr ARESTI leaving in 1866 probably was him.

Just found in the Argus an ad placed by Henry SARJEANT just after his arrival in late June 1859, looking for his sister Mrs J ARESTI.

PS Any idea what time of the year the reg numbers are likely to be so I can have a look in the Argus for death notices.

Do you have the link for the National Library's beta newspapers.  Interesting mention of Joseph Aresti's piece in the Victorian Exhibition.

Some of the items have already been mentioned by Jenn.

Joseph Aresti did return to London where he died in 1878.  I've found the following on the free government search site for wills and probate. - (1879) 30 June.  The Will of Joseph Aresti late of 29 East-street, Lamb's Conduit Street in the County of Middlesex who died 17 May 1878 at King's College Hospital Portugal Street in the said County was proved in the Principal Registry by Francis Levien of the Stock Exchange in the City of London Gentleman the sole Executor. - Personal Estate under £100.
Francis Levien was the son of Elizabeth Aresti and Edward Levien.  I am assuming that Elizabeth was Joseph's older sister (she was born ca 1899). Elizabeth died in 1870.   When Joseph married Emma Sarjeant (or Sargeant) his father was listed as Michael Aresti. A Michael Aresti married a Sophia Garrett in St George, Hanover Square, London in 1796.
PS Have just discovered I could attach the snip re the probate
