Charlotte Square - Rhiwbina???
« on: Wednesday 12 August 09 17:56 BST (UK) »
Hello,
This is the first time that this has ever happened to me. I called to the Central Library in Cardiff to view  the Electoral List for 1927 to lookup Charlotte Square, Rhiwbina, Cardiff.

The only Charlotte Square I could find was under the District of Penylan which is very odd as it is almost the other side of Cardiff.

I phoned the City Council to ask if they knew in which Ward the 'Square' would have been in 1927. Unfortunately although extremely helpful they did not know, but did agree that it may not have been included in the Cardiff ER at that time.

Would anyone familiar with the area know if it was included in maybe Caerphilly or even Barry.

Many thanks

Hi
Its strange that but  I would say it would be under Caerphilly , but really Rhiwbina always came under Whitchurch and Whitchurch came under Senghenydd (Caerphilly)
not sure how that helps but might prompt someone else to answer the question
cheers cardiff :)

Hello Cardiff,
It may be worth my while phoning Caerphilly Council and see what advice they can come up with. It is strange but parts of Fidlas Road  in the 1911 census came under Glamorgan and the remainder came under Monmouth.
Thanks

Roadrunner

Just spotted this and couldn't help sticking my nose in!  I know Charlotte Square and wonder if it was even built in 1927?  You may know better, but it was just a thought I had.  I think a lot of Rhiwbina was built after completion of the Garden Village, so 1927 could be a little early for Charlotte Square?  Another thought is that, even if some houses existed in C. Sq. in 1927, the road may not have been named at that time.

Hello Gilly,
You may well be correct in some of what you say. Rhiwbina Garden Village and Pen-Y-Dre road were listed in the 1927 Electoral Listing and I also think Beulah Road. The marriage certificate definitely gives the address "Baslow", Charlotte Square, Rhiwbina. Now the father was a builder's labourer so perhaps they were being built at the time.
Thanks

Hello Roadrunner

Thanks for replying.  In your first post you mentioned Barry, so you probably know that Rhiwbina (bizarrely) was in the Barry parliamentary constituency up until (I think) the 1974 reorganisation.  That's the only clue I can come up with.

Best of luck in solving the mystery!

Hello Gill,
That's the type of clue I'm looking for. I too was wondering if it came under another area. Tomorrow I'll ring Barry and also Caerphilly Council and see what they come up with.
Once again many thanks for your help.

Hello Gill,
Phoned the various Councils. Very helpful but unable to identify which district Charlotte Square came under. A visit to a library to look at old maps 1920's - 30's showed that the Square did not exist in 1922 but did by 1930. Also alongside it on the map was written Llandaff & Dinas Powys RD. Phoned GRO and they have the ER Listings so will be paying them a visit within the next few days.
Thanks for your help

Hello, Roadrunner

Thank you so much for keeping me up to date on this.  The little by-ways which family history tempts us down  are so interesting, aren't they?  I have to say, I don't know how electoral registers were/are organised - I would have thought by constituency but it just goes to show how little I know!

Best of luck with the next round.

Regards,
Gill
