Gifkins entering England Completed
« on: Thursday 13 August 09 09:34 BST (UK) »
Could some kind person with access look up in Passenger Lists, for when the Gifkins family entered England.

The names are William, Catherine with possible children William, Sarah, Mary, Martin and Henry. All bar William were born abroad, even his wife.

I think they enter England via Southampton prior to 1863, as at that time William made his will in Winchester Hampshire, stating that he was retired form the Army. passing away soon after.

I have never found William in any English census.

Thanks

Clare

The incomnig passengers lists on ancestry only start at 1878.
But there are a surprising number of Gifkins on there. (many arriving from Canada, but other places too)
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Hi

Stangley enough I checked ancestry  and their names came up???

But I don't have access to view. Maybe it is just William Junior.

Any information would be great

Regards

Clare

There does seem to be a hit for a William Gifkins, but not for, say, Sarah or Martin so probably either unrelated or something to do with William Jr.

From the 1871 census, I can see them scattered, possibly:
Catherine, 45, b. Gilbraltrar, a widow and servant in St. Michael Winchester Hampshire
Mary, 23, b. Ireland, a ladies maid in Marylebone
Sarah, 22, b. India, schoolmistress, brother Charlie, 11, b. Winchester Hampshire and sister Catherine, 9, b. Winchester Hampshire, in St. Thomas Winchester
Martin, 14, b. Meerat India, at Woolhampton College St. Mary in Berkshire.

In 1861 I found them misindexed (as "Pipkins" on what I have, don't know about what Ancestry will list them under. Handwriting is not the easiest)
RG9/691 folio 118 page 14
Clement Street, St. Thomas Winchester
William Jifkins? (old-style f looks like a p, first letter of surname hard to read), 39 (or possibly 37), soldier, b. Oxfordshire Chatgray(??)
Catherine, 32, b. Ireland
Mary M, 16, b. Ireland
Sarah, 14, b. East Indies
William, 12, b. East Indies
Martin, 5, b. East Indies
Henry, 3, b. East Indies
Charles, 1, b. Hants Winchester

Thank you very much for finding them in the 1861 census. I hadn't thought of putting something like Pipkins.

My problem is with the grandchildren who appear with Catherine from the 1891 census on-wards. They give their place of birth as Folkestone. Kent But I can't find an entry for any of them. So I don't know who their parents are?

Catherine Priscilla is my grandmother, she puts her fathers name as William Merchant on her marriage certificate? Maybe I should look under Pipkins?

Thank you once again

Kind Regards

Clare

William seems to have consistantly adopted this spelling.
Here are the births of the children:

MAry Ann Jefkins
Jan/Feb/Mar 1879
Elham (covers Folkestone) ref 2a 989

Margaret Jefkins
Ap/May/Jun1875
Elham 2a 890

Katherine Jefkins
Jul/Aug/Sep 1876
Elham 2a 937

William Patrick
Jan/Feb/Mar 1879
Elham 2a 989

There are also numerous other Jefkins births in Elham from more that one set of parents, so I dont know if William and wife had more, or if a sibling also settled in this area and adopted this spelling of the name, or if they are unconnected.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex
