Elizabeth Knight missing - help please
« on: Friday 14 August 09 02:01 BST (UK) »
Hello  :)

My GG-Grandmother Elizabeth Knight (nee Dagger) born Blackpool abt 1871 married my GG-Grandfather John William Knight in Bury in 1891.

However somewhere between 1901 and 1911 she vanishes because only John William and their five daughters - Grace, Gertie, Annie, Elsie and my G-Grandmother Amy are with him in Rochdale in 1911.

I know he re-married some time around the end of WW1 but I don't know if Elizabeth had died or not. There are no matching deaths in Bury or in Rochdale or even Lancashire for the time period or right age.

Can anybody help find out what became of her?

Thankyou

Jonathan

Hello  :)

As part of the protest against the government’s refusal to grant women the vote, a mass boycott of the census was organised by the suffragette movement.   Thousands of women (estimated at several thousand)  are missing from the 1911 census as a result.  They either left the house for the night or just refused to be entered on the form.  This may be why you can`t find her.

Have you found her husbands 2nd marriage yet or do you have her name?

Regards,
Mo

There are two possibles regarding his second marriage...

...the first is in Skipton in 1912 to a Sarah Geldart. Something to support this marriage is the fact there is just one Sarah Geldart in Skipton in 1911 and she is give or take a year the same age as John William - That being 40.
Skipton does also get a mention when we've asked that side of the family. That and the fact that John William did re-marriage and oddly that he had another child with this 2nd wife. I say odd because neither the Skipton marriage or the below marriage appear to have any children born of it.

The second possible is 1918 in Rochdale to a Harriet A Clegg

I do like you theory regarding the suffragettes - Maybe she felt she had to make a stand for her five daughters.

Thankyou

Jonathan
