BOURNE HOUSE
« on: Monday 17 August 09 11:33 BST (UK) »
My grandfather [Aaron Walton, 1886-1967,] had three children.
The eldest [Martha Walton, 1908-1937] was born in BOURNE HOUSE, HORTON.
It sounds a rather grand place for a Hewers bairn to be born !
Anyone heard of the place ?

Do you know which Horton it was? What part of the country?

Sorry...I should have said it's Horton in Northumberland. Horton - by - Blyth.

A combination of old age and stupidity !

Did it say Bourne House on the birth cert or on the 1911 census?  I think I've got the right family on the 1911, but eldest seems to be called Mabel, not Martha!

I've just had a look on historicaldirectories.org at the 1914 Kellys directory, but there doesn't seem to be a Bourne House in Horton  :-\

I was embarrased with the first error - now I have compounded it with another !

Mabel Walton is  :(the child born in Bourne House, Horton.
Martha was her mother and Aaron her father.
Bourne house is given on the birth certificate as place of birth.
The name Horton covered quite a large area, encompassing various 'hamlets' near Blyth.
Mabel's father Aaron was working as a coal miner hewer in, I believe, the Forster Pit which is near what is now New Delaval.

I promise to improve.

 ;D  ;)  It's Monday!

I'll go and have a look on 1900 - 1910 directories, see if they have anything

Why? The rest of us haven't! ;D

Seriously, don't worry, we all make mistakes or miss things out. You'll soon get used to it.

In 1894 Kellys directory, there is a Melbourne Hall, the property of Miss Bates, in Hartford East (1.5 miles from Horton).  In the township is colliery owned by Cramlington Coal Co.

I can't find any other reference to a Bourne or Bourn House in the area. Your "Melbourne" looks like a possibility. Might Mabel's mother have been working there at the time of the birth?
