Transportation to Australia
« on: Wednesday 19 August 09 17:51 BST (UK) »
Had great help from Scottish rootschat  finding out what crime my ancestor was transported for. Know he was sent to NSW for 7 years leaving in 1837. Does anyone know of any websites to help me find out what happened to him once there? Thanks

Hi
I found this site useful:

http://www.claimaconvict.net/

"This is a comprehensive website which provides information on many convicts that came to Australia. On the site is a listing of about 9,000 convicts which includes convicts arriving between 1793 and early 1800, a convict post box - contains convicts arriving at any time, any place in Australia and Irish convicts and exiles to Australia".

Hi Mary

If you would like to supply a name, convict ship and date, I'm sure somebody will gladly help with the search. There are numerous Australian State BDM's details available, plus other lines of research.

I did find "Claim A Convict" very  good originally, as it lets you find your convict, and also links anybody else researching that same convict. However, a couple of years ago the owner of the website, kept all the convict names but cancelled every link to researchers. Those researchers can only be linked if that convict is "re-claimed" by that researcher.

Thanks to 2 people who answered. I had not noticed this Australian site.

My Ancestor is Alexander Kirk born about 1791. Tried at Perth, Scotland  on 3 October 1836 and sentenced to 7 years. In the Australian Convict Transportation Register Other Fleets and Ships it says his voyage date was 10 July 1837 on the James Pattison to New South Wales. I looked on the list on claim your convict but his name was not there.

It would be so interesting to find out what happened to him.

With thanks

Hi Mary

There a lots of excellent resources at the top of the board, however as your convict ancestor was transported to NSW you may like to start with these links
http://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/navigators/convicts/index.html

NSW Resources...scroll down to convict url links

Thank you to everyone. Cando, you have really got me started. Great to see the Certificate of freedom and I have now found the ticket of leave. Is there usually more information on the original ie is it worth sending for the originals all the way to UK?

Can't find a likely marriage or death in NSW but I suppose, once free, people could move to another state
