Any Records for a James McAleer or Ann Donelly
« on: Thursday 20 August 09 17:48 BST (UK) »
Would any one have any records of a James McAleer who according to the 1911 census was born in Tyrone around 1842 / 1843 or his wife Ann Donelly born in Tyrone around 1835.
I know and have records for them being in Jarrow 1881, 1891, 1901.
I also beleive that he James married  Ann, in South Shields early 1865, although James name on the Marriage Certificate is James McAlear.
James was my 3x great grandfather, whose daughter Catherine my 2x grandmother who was born in Jarrow in 1866, but when it comes to her marriage it states on the certificate in the name and surname box " Catherine McAleer Discribed in the certificate as Catherine McLear" would this mean does anyone think that the surname should in fact be McAlear instead of McAleer or is this pertaining to the Catholic Chuch Records?

Any information would be gratefully received.
Many Thank Al

Civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864- for earlier dates you'd need to check church records (if they exist) but to do so you need to know where they lived (parish if not actual townland not just the county).
Regarding the spelling of the surname, there are many variations and spelling wasn't standardised so there could be various spellings for the same person (and I've even seen where a person's name was written 2 or more ways in the same document).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
