WESTON Family Calne
« on: Sunday 23 August 09 16:02 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to track down Emily Weston. Despite conflicting information on Census and marriage records, I believe she was born in Calne between 1861 and 1865, although moved to Cardiff later in the 1860's. Her father was an Edwin Weston; there is an Edwin Weston who married Eliza Gaisford in Calne in 1866 (after Emily was born) and later moved to Cardiff but in 1871 Emily was living with her mother "Jane". I can't find any references to any marriage between an Edwin Weston and any Jane.
I have birth certs for Emily Weston's born in 1862 in Calne to William and Elizabeth Weston, and in 1862 in Bishops Canning to John and Ann, but neither fit in with other information I have.

Hi Steve
Welcome to rootschat  ;D

In 1871 Jane says she is a widow born Taunton and there are two children Emily bn Taunton and Edwin bn 1870 in Wales.  You say that Emily isn't constant with her place of birth, could you please give a bit more information about her ie where she was living (married name)  and place of birth on later census.

Perhaps Jane wasn't married at all and when Emily was asked for her fathers name when she got married she gave the name of her brother to disguise illegitamacy.

Why do you think that she was born in Calne ?

Rosie

Rosie,
The link to Calne is mainly due to unverified references from my family, and its the only place I have found reference to an Edwin Weston of the right sort of age - could be coincidence that he also moved to Cardiff at around the same time? In further Census references after she is married she lists Cardiff as her place of birth.
There is a Jane Weston in the 1881 Census from Somerset of the right age who is listed as widowed, but can't find any death record of an Edwin Weston. Also no birth records of Emily's brother Edwin or traces of him in 1881 Census so trying to work backwards. Any suggestions?
