Where is Greenlithe, Kent?
« on: Tuesday 04 May 04 13:39 BST (UK) »
I have an ancestor, Frances Octavious Bedford born about 1795, who resided at "Crayland House, near Greenlithe in the County of Kent..". He also died there in 1858.

Is there anyone who knows where this place is? - PLEASE.

Hi there Reggie

I am not aware of a Greenlithe in Kent, but there is a 'Greenhithe' which is right next door to the Dartford Tunnel / Bridge  - River Crossing of the Thames on the edge of London.

Thanks Chris.  According to the 'FreeBMD' he died in the District of "Dartford".  I guess that would be the same area?

Yep, you are correct, it is next to Dartford and the Tunnel.

I work 2 mins from Greenhithe.

I am researching my family tree and have received a lot of help from people all over the world, so if you like I am quite happy to go to the local chruch yard and see if there are and records/MI's that may relate.
I am almost certain there is no Church in Greenhithe therefore the nearest is Stone.

Found following on location of Crayland House:

Crayland House Galley Hill Swanscombe opposite George and Dragon

If you have a look at this map you will see the Pub is just below London Road on the right hand side of the map

Hope this helps

Thanks for your reply.

I would certainly love any help with this ancestor.  According to the Times paper he died at this residence (Crayland House), so maybe he is buried in one of the near churchyards or a nearby cemetery.  He would be C of E if that makes it any easier.  A pic of the tombstone would be helpful too.

I appreciate your assistance.

Leave it with me and I will see what I can find out.

I will contact the Church Warden for Stone church and obtain permission to have a look around. Hopefully, if the weather is ok this weekend. (Its raining hard at the moment - which is no surprise as Wimbledon is on)

Reg,

Some good news and bad news.

I was told by one of my collegues that there is a church along the same road.
Managed to pop up there yesterday and found the Church, its right opposite the location of the house, and on the opposire corner of the road junction to the Pub.

TheChurch is All Saints Church. The bad news is that its been turned into flats at some time and if there were any burials on the site they or the stones have all been moved.

I will check with the council on Monday, they should be able to tell me if there were burials and what happened.

There is only one house left opposite the George and Dragon, which is marked as Nr 19. Therefore must assume that Craylands house along with any other has been demolished, but again hopefully the local council may be able to advise.

If you send me a personnal message with you email address, I will keep you updated directly.
