Fanny Harriett Cole
« on: Thursday 27 August 09 12:02 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help me in trying to trace one of my husband's ancestors.

Her name is Fanny Harriett Cole and she married George Thomas Festorazzi in 1871 in Tunbridge Wells.

In the 1881 census they were still living in Tunbridge Wells and had three children, Fanny, Jenny and Horace.

In the 1881 census she is listed as Harriett, but on Horace's birth certificate his mother is Fanny Harriett Festorazzi, formally Cole.

Because everything I have so far about the Festorazzis revolves around the Tunbridge Wells area, I assume that Fanny Harriett Cole was also from there.

I can't seem to find a birth registration for her.  The nearest I have found is a Fanny Cole (no middle name) in Medway in June 1845.  There seems to be something a bit odd about this entry, on FreeBMD  the page is 70, but usually I can click onto the page, but this time it is just typed and it cannot be clicked on.

Does anyone know anywhere else I can look for her birth

Hi

According to the 1891 and 1901 censuses her birthplace was Withyham, Sussex (which would have been within East Grinstead registration district at the time of her birth).

She was

35 in 1881 (suggests b abt 1846)
42 in 1891 (suggests b abt 1849)
54 in 1901 (suggests b abt 1847)
66 in early 1915 at death (suggests b 1848-9)

Hi all

The 1861 census shows a Harriet Cole age 15 born Withyham in service at Speldhurst

In 1851, a 4 year old Harriet Cole is to be found in Withyham, parents George and Sarah (she has a brother Horace) - HO107/1641 43 17

I can see a birth for Harriett Cole in East Grinstead (Jun 1846) but not for a Harriett Fanny.

1871 shows her (must be her!) as 25 yr old unmarried Fanny Cole b Withyham, in service in Tunbridge Wells: RG10/930/123/11.

I haven't got a marriage certificate.  Just a birth certificate for her son Horace.

According to that she is Fanny Harriett Festorazzi, formally Cole.

This would explain why her eldest daughter is called Fanny, but not why she is referred to on the census as Harriett.

Thanks for the help, it looks like she must have originated in Withyham Sussex.
