Death records at Western Cape Archives
« on: Friday 28 August 09 01:11 BST (UK) »
I have been searching unsuccessfully for Mary CUNDILL, born 24 Dec 1857 in Edinburgh, who was the cousin of my grandmother Jane Eleanora McIntosh.

Mary CUNDILL married David MILLER, Jewel case maker, in London:
1883 Marriage solemnized at the Church of St Philip in the parish of Clerkenwell in the County of Middlesex (Holborn Registration District)
No.425                        Dec 24th 1883
David Miller  Age 25             Bachelor   Jewell (sic) Case Maker     15 Yardley St.
Mary Cundill  Age 25             Spinster   24 Lloyd Square
James Miller, Butler (decd.)               Andrew Cundill, Blacksmith
Married in the Church of St Philip according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church, after Banns by me, Alfred T. Fryer.
This Marriage was solemnized between us, David Miller, Mary Cundill, in the Presence of us, Robert Carr, Margaret Cundill, Henry Thomas Probert.

I could not find them in 1891, 1901 British census, in British death indices, nor in Ancestry.com.

Should any RootsChat member be visiting the Western Cape Archives, 72 Roeland Street, Cape Town, I would be grateful if they would please look up the following death records, the references found on the South African NAAIRS site (Before I order I need to know that these are indeed my family):

David Miller, 1889, 6/9/275, 2369, MOOC, KAB

Mary Miller, 1898, 6/9/374, 704, MOOC, KAB

Mary Miller, 1905, 6/9/524, 1703, MOOC, KAB
Mary Miller, 1948, 6/9/15220, 3785/48, MOOC, KAB
Mary Miller, 1954, 6/9/23092, 5214/54, MOOC, KAB

More details of this couple to help identify them:

His parents were James Miller, butler, and Elizabeth Stevenson
Occupation in 1883: Jewel case maker

Mary MILLER, nee CUNDILL, born 24 December 1857 in Edinburgh, Scotland

Thank you,
John Johnston

Hi Ouma,
Thank you very much for your kind offer.
This couple, David Miller/Mary Cundill have been my "brick wall" for a while, they disappeared after their marriage in 1883, and just might have gone to South Africa.
Cecil Rhodes was encouraging emigration about that time, the de Beers diamond industry was up and coming, and maybe jewel case makers were in demand!
Best wishes,
John

Hi John

Bad news  :'( None of the Mary Millers are your family and the David Miller was not
married so its just as well you didn't order the docs. Looks like they are going to be
the brick wall still.

Hi Ouma,
Many Thanks for looking up the David and Mary Miller records. I'm beginning to think they may have changed their name, and there is always the chance that they separated and Mary remarried.
Best wishes, and thanks again.
John
