Hi Folks,

I am hoping some of the research notes I have written  and posted below may ring some bells with some readers.
My particular interest is to try to find anything concrete about the Robert Doherty and Elizabeth Thompson union, BDM etc. Also I am trying to link what I am supposing to be their children to them, James(my gtgtgrandfather) and Solomon I have confirmed. But of Robert and Elizabeth (listed below)and I assume others, I have yet to find real evidence.

The family were farm labourers so as such could have been faily mobile but I've assumed them to be based mainly in and around the Aghadowey area for research purposes.

NOTES

Could  all the Robert Dohertys be the same family?

Robert John Doherty
Robert John Doherty and Hester Callaghan had four children included below. Source Roots Ireland and LDS.

1911 census shows Roberts DOB 1842
1901 census shows Roberts DOB 1848.
They show on censuses living as
Residents of a house 2 in Cullycapple (Agivey, Londonderry) 1911 census
Residents of a house 12 in Cullyeapple (Agivey, Londonderry) 1901 census
•   Robert John Doherty and Hester(Leslie) Callighan had a son in 1874 called Robert John (Aghadowey RD). Source  Roots Ireland web site.
•   William Dougherty DOB 24 June 1877 Aghadowey . Source LDS. William could have died before 1901 as he does not appear on 1901 census and 1911 census shows Hester to have had 4 children with only 3 living.
•   Sarah Dougherty DOB Circa 1878. 1901 census of Ireland.

Time line for Robert Doherty Elizabeth Thompsons children?.

James Dougherty DOB 1862  (Elizabeths age giving birth 41)
Solomon Dougherty DOB 1865  (Elizabeths age giving birth 44)

This would push Robert Doherty and Elizabeth Thompsons marriage to pre 1841 so DOB circa 1821. DOD circa 1881.

Any help, info or suggestions (keep them clean please!!!) ;D much appeciated as usual

Kind regards to all

Doherty (and variations) is probably the most common surname in St. Guaire's records so I think you might be linking too many of them in family groups but will have to check my files to be sure.
Meanwhile here are a few corrections and additions (not sure of your sources for the marriages in St. Guaire's but my notes are from the original church registers).

11th Dec 1856 Eliza Jane Dogerty DOGHERTY (Gortin)Father John (land stewart) married Samuel Pedan (Agivey)Father Hugh.

25th April 1858 Eliza Dogherty (Bovagh)Father Patrick (farmer) married Robert Kennedy (Caheny)Father Alexander

5th July 1861  Elizabeth Dogherty (Caheny)Father Robert (labourer) married John Callighan (Caheny)Father Hugh

11th Oct 1864 George Dogherty  DOHERTY clerk (Gortin)Father John farmer married Mary Hamsin HAMSIE(Clarehill)Father Bernard

2nd May 1867 James Doherty (Cullycapple) widower Father Hugh married Elizabeth Conly(Cullycapple) Father John

16th Dec 1871 1870 Robert John Doherty  DOGHERTY(Caheny)Father Robert married Leslie Callighan (Caheny)Father ?? HESTER CALLAGHER Mullahinch d/o WILLIAM
Leslie Callighan is mis transcribed should be Hester Callaghan confirmed by LDS and Roots Ireland.

8th April 1879 Mary Jane Dogherty(Cullycapple)Father John married Robert Alexander McCloy (Gortfadd). Fireman Mullamore son of Thompson McCloy fireman F James

Hi Aghadowey,

Thanks for so much for checking my notes, I’ll amend them to reflect your changes in names, dates and add the professions . My information on the St Guire Church weddings was taken from the Bann Valley website. Your good self in particular, Rootschat in general and BannValley website are a real godsend to those of us researching Bann Valley and environs.

You are right about Dogherty and its many derivatives, it´s a minefield to traipse through. I don’t know if I am making a correct assumption  but as my Doherty ancestors  seem to have been mostly laboring people;  and I presume fairly uneducated;  I am viewing all the name variations as simply the whim of whoever was the scribe of the event being registered.

Thanks for your post with further information on Robert John Doherty  Hester Callagher and their children.  It was really Robert John Doherty and Elizabeth Doherty that I wanted to tie down as being children of Elizabeth Thompson and Robert Doherty.  I am also looking for marriage evidence of Elizabeth Thompson and Robert Doherty, as all the confirmation I have at the moment comes from my gtgrandfather James Dohertys´ Scottish death certificate.

As noted previously, in the St Guire Church wedding records both Robert john Doherty (DOW 1870)and Elizabeth Doherty (DOW1861)  both had a father called Robert and both lived in Caheny at the time of marriage so its fair to assume brother and sister. My gt grandfather James Doherty was married in St Guire Church(DOW1890) and his father was Robert so I am looking for information, birth record that could tie him and his brother Solomon to Robert John and Elizabeth Doherty.

Hey ho, I think I´m beginning to ramble a bit, so I´ll put a lid on it for the time being.

Thanks for your help again Aghadowey, and to anyone else who´s looking.
Kind regards to all.

Abunile.

Labouring families moved about a good bit so you can't assume they are related even if lived in same townland at one time.
My grandfather's grandmother (not Doherty) lived in a townland with 17 families with the same surname there (almost all farmers). A number of years ago a relative in N.Z. got a lovely family tree from PRONI for one of the families there and asked me where our branch came in since they "had to be related." Guess what- 17 families with same surname in same place and he got family tree for the one family that moved there from outside the area!

Wow,

Just when I thought Irish genealogy could not get any harder!! >:(

Seriously though, that´s why I am trying to get some kind of documentary evidence or third party confirmation of the assumptions I have made.

Not living in the UK and having only access to documents through internet sources I´ve run up against the proverbial brick wall with this, until I can get up and across to N Ireland myself which I am hoping to do next summer.

Thanks and all the best

Abunile.

Forgot to add that much of the information on Bann Valley site is unreliable, mistranscribed, etc.

Hi many thanks to Abunile for giving me the link to this thread.   I am the grand daughter of Maria Doherty and am like wise looking for information and documentation for Robert Doherty and Martha Elizabeth Doherty.   I will be visiting next year.    I visited County Tyrone this summer past, and had a great time tracing the McCausland side of the family.    Wishing everyone here a very Merry Christmas and a Guid New Year.
