where is Itham, Northumberland? COMPLETED WITH THANKS!
« on: Friday 28 August 09 20:05 BST (UK) »
Hello Rootschatters! Armed with other people's successes in finding obscure/unknown places .....can anyone tell me where "Itham, Northumberland" is located? I suspect it may be near Cornhill as that is where George Selby and Ann Rye married in about 1652. Any suggestions will be most appreciated. Thank you!  Pat

Can not see any ITHAM within Northumberland, past or present.

However spotting a piece within Preshous's link...

A noble Selby from Twizel ( within Parish of Norham, which neighboured Parish of Cornhill)  in 1591 bought a fortified house ( a mote) called IGHTHAM Mote in the county of Kent ?

Hello Preshous and Michael, Thank you for your response and the Wikipedia reference. I am fairly certain that that information ties into what I am seeking...Specifically, in the IGI <ancestral file> there is an entry for one of my SELBY family....I think.  ???   The reference is to George Selby b. abt 1622 and the entry reads he was christened "of the moat in Itham, Northumber, England."  He married Ann Rye in Cornhill, NBL. Based on the Wikipedia entry, perhaps the submitter merely assumed (ahem!) that George Selby was from Northumberland when, in fact, he was from, possibly....Kent.....At any rate, "further research is indicated!"    AND, I really appreciate your interest.  Thank you! Sincerely, Pat

 Pat,

Although Cornhill became an "independent" parish, there was a time when it only a "chapel of ease" within the Norham "mother" parish.

Also Cornhill/Norham area was part of County Durham until 1844.

And I am sure that above info will make the difference between  you having an average weekend or a great one !

I see this is an old post and perhaps by now you have worked out that Ightham is in Kent and the Mote refers to Ightham Mote, the estate acquired by William Selby of Twizel in Northumberland. George Selby, Fishmonger of London, married Anne Rye of Faversham, Kent. If you would like further information, please respond to this message.
Cheers, Gerelle
