Need Help Robert Adams

hi I have a Robert Adams b. abt 1860 at Paisley Abbey (from1911 census) he married Mary Kerwin in Belfast in 1888 I have been told he was a Soldier all his children were born in Belfast , by  1901  they were in Barrow in Furness
His father was Robert Adams b.abt 1830 in Scotland possibly Glasgow , he married a Mary Cherry I am guessing it was Scotland he was a Sea Captain .and sailed around Inverness , Cumbria and Ireland I have been told there was  a book on him   
 I haven't been able to find out anything on these two Roberts I keep comming up with brickwalls in Ireland and Scotland, any ideas
